About 100m further up that hill there is a couple of sharpish, off camber bends, it's quite narrow and bumpy as well.

I agree with Dylan. I'd picture myself as a pretty hard edged, well seasoned sort of guy (I don't get scared when driving with micky bahaha) but some of the Kiama turns looked scary if things went awry.

Didn't he hit something that got him out of shape in the first place? Looks like there's just grass on the side of the road, if he had one or two tires on the grass when trying to recover from swerving it would be easy to lose it.

and it has been very wet here lately so the grass is pretty slippery.

I'll also point out the hill he was coming down is pretty steep, it doesn't look it in the photos though.
