  1. The biggest problem I reckon would be the climate control, things like TV/GPS etc can be pretty standard but the CC controls would be unique to Toyota, if not to the 110s

Try having a look at what the Z30 Soarer guys do with their EMV, I know there are converters out there to fix the TV and radio (the Soarer EMV runs both) at least, and English button stickers too

  2. Only real problems I see with the Blit are the auto (for some reason they didn't bother to put the 5-speed auto in the IR-Vs, and obviously no manual option either, but I can live with that for a family car) and the scarcity of body parts if it gets in a prang - driveline etc wouldn't be as bad due to other 1JZs in the country.

  3. Hi Hiro - thanks for your reply. I bought the car second hand, so not sure if it's top spec, or after market alarm. It's definitely not the horn that goes off, it's a serious piercing alarm. When I checked the alarm under the bonnet, there's a tiny cover you can lift, and it looks like a key fits on - there's an arrow on it. But no key came with the car. If I could find a key somehow, and turn it off, that'd be my answer, I reckon?

Also, I don't want to try it, but do you reckon the alarm would go nuts if I took the negative cable off the battery? That way at least I can stop the battery going flat...

Your user details say it's an '94 AE101 CSi (ie pre-facelift, base model), in which case it definitely wouldn't be the top-spec factory security system.

Do you have any photos of the alarm unit under the bonnet? Same with the remote (I know my factory central-locking remote doesn't have any screws to remove the back casing, it is a sealed unit that you basically either have to break open or take back to Toyota to get the battery changed)

  4. Are we talking factory alarm system (basic or top spec) here or an aftermarket one? An actual siren or just the horn going off?

I know when I take my battery out that the alarm would not go off (there is no battery backup), but I've only got the factory remote central locking and immobiliser (and just the basic security system which sounds the horn)

If it's an aftermarket system then often there is a little key to disable the alarm (I know there is on the Mongoose system in the Soarer, for instance), there should be a module somewhere where you can deactivate it (handy if you're working for long periods with the bonnet open or need to take the battery out)

  5. it's blardy brilliant I say - FK getting loans / leases - can save up this kinda money and be a boss outright, 30-40k range.

It'll be cheaper than 40k, Cuts' is that expensive because he's shelling out for the first-run compliancing/emissions testing etc, Iron Chef reckon they'll be down in the high 20s for non-black high-km ones, into the low 30s for a good black one, and the Modellista maybe hitting 40.

But then again, if you're shelling out that kind of money you'd be gunning for a low-k 5A Modellista anyway :P

  6. i think if he meant the sensor in the intake he would have said MAF sensor..........................................................................

but yes fair question as some people dont know the difference

I've lost count of the number of times people have referred to the intake air-temp sensor (either incorporated into the AFM/MAF or as a standalone sensor) as an "oxygen sensor"

  7. Check that your thermofans are turning on. If you're spending a lot of time stopped and idling then there is no airflow over the radiator apart from what the thermofans can pull/push through - this is why cars overheat at slow speeds in traffic and not blasting along the freeway at 110.

When you say "coolant loss", are you continually having to add coolant or does the level just change suddenly between when the car is hot and cold? When the coolant heaps up it expands into the overflow bottle, filling it up. As the car cools it draws this overflow coolant back into the radiator, causing the level to go down.

If you're continually having to top up the radiator and overflow bottle then you could have blown a headgasket, unless you are overheating it so much that the coolant is literally boiling and evaporating in the overflow bottle (possible, but it'd have to be pretty serious to be doing it in large volumes)

  8. The only problem is the sat nav not being able to be programmed while the car is moving. What a terrible feature, what were they thinking!!!

Programming a GPS takes a lot more button-presses and concentration than simply changing a radio station, hence why it is disabled whilst the car is moving, to prevent the driver being distracted. Same reason why dash-mounted DVD screens can't play movies unless the handbrake is activated, to stop drivers being distracted by a movie whilst driving.

It's not a "terrible feature", it is a safety implementation to stop people taking their eyes off the road and plowing into a telegraph pole, or worse oncoming traffic.

  9. IMO, first gen Aurion trumps all the newer designs. Not a huge fan of the back end of the new Camry - looks like it's cross bred with a liberty nor the new Aurion (which looks like it was reversed into a wall).

The front end of the Atara models is quiet nice but overall I still think I like the Gen7 better.

Civic - never been a fan. The new one is gross as well.

I'd take the current Accord Euro (even with its 5 year old design) over all of them but.

There's an Aurion Body kit going for sale soon from Japan - looks a bit like the Mark X - they should bring that car to Australia.

    Totally agree!

I would definitely buy the Mark X if they were sold here.. I considered importing but seems that they do not allow it to be privately imported.. x(

You can now import the current model GRX133 Mark X as of a couple of months ago, mate in Tassie is getting the first one in the country (and was the guinea-pig for compliancing)

  10. 2012 Prius manual says use Premium Unleaded.

Inside petrol cap says E10 is also suitable.

Dealer says he wouldn't put E10 in anything he owns, even a lawnmower

Toyota Australia said that the only reason that Premium Unleaded was mentioned, was that this was a common 95 octane fuel used in many countries, whereas 91 unleaded wasn't, but wouldn't say if you could use E10 or regular 91 unleaded, instead he referred me to my dealer.

    What's the truth?

All of the above? Remember that E10 (unless you're in NSW) is ~94/95RON anyway (ie same as Premium), so as long as the fuel system is compatible with ethanol (which it would be in a new car) then there would be no issues running E10. The comments by the dealer about not using E10 are a personal preference and probably hinge around the increased fuel consumption and damage to fuel systems not capable of running ethanol fuels (which lawnmowers almost certainly aren't)

95 is common especially in Europe and Japan (Australia has relatively crappy fuel) so can see the reasoning there.

  12. lol @ wear and tear of an oil pipe! did some one say recall?

Not all oil cooler lines are hard-pipe - a short rubber section could be seeing frequent heat cycles (as the flow to the cooler opens and closes) as well as being exposed to the elements living up under the front bar, so I could see it perishing (just not so quickly)

  13. Just FYI, the bistro section is separate from the bar. And there are plenty of tables etc outside where you can sit, eat and enjoy the sun.

Also, depending on the pub, under 18s can be in the bar section as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult - small bar licenses don't normally allow this though (and Wollombi Tavern isn't that huge).
