  1. W58s get put behind old-skool Holden V8s (302s etc) so they can handle a decent amount of power/torque, you'll probably never find a hard-and-fast number though as a lot of it comes down to driving style

  2. I just recently bought my 1993 SZ supra, is it true that the standard transmissions are rated to handle up to 800hp?

SZ = 5-speed manual = W58, a reasonably strong 'box but in no way an 800HP box. The V160/161 6-speed in the RZ and SZ-R, on the other hand...

Also, this thread is over 7 years old, with the last post more than 2 years ago...

  3. And to go with those shiny rotors, a nice chaser of Redstuffs

Got installed on Wednesday (attempted myself but was worried about rounding off the caliper bolts so left it to someone with better tools), has made an immediate world of difference - no more juddering when tapping the brakes at speed, no more slow pulsing to a halt at traffic lights ending up 2m from the car in front because of the sticking slides and warped rotors. Just got to get used to the significantly greater stopping power, only takes a gentle prod of the pedal to stop on a dime.

Hitting ABS in the dry might just be a possibility now, even with the KU39s...

  4. Hey Nathan, I see you have 5kg at the back. What wheel size and width are you on? And what are the coils set to? Im getting stiffer springs for my coils, just trying to work out 4.5kg/6kg or more... Do you have any issues with a carload of people as it sits?

i have heard that you would need to get your shockies revalved to handle stiffer spring, not sure if this is correct but it is something to keep in mind :/

OP is talking about coilovers, so no need (most have damper adjustment these days)

  5. That's UnZud dollars though, so a bit cheaper in $AUS

yeah man the reason i got the rebuilt becoz the big end bearings went ..easier to rebuilt cbf waiting for a 2nd hand engine.. signature performance done all the work blue print n balance cost just under 5k . Im still learning bout engines soo bare with me.. i gave sp an extra 2.5k asked them to give me alittle more power in the list of things that were done was shortened the crank dont know alot about this but mick oshea from sp said they shaved the crank down abit which in turn will give me more rev range which it has as i said before im redlining at 8000rpm

Sounds like the crank was lightned/knife-edged (basically reduces the size of the counterweights). What ECU are you using (there's no mention of it in the first post)

  6. The exhaust is on the firewall side in these photos and that's where they hung the turbo.

I know that, but since there is a lot of stuff on or near the firewall (as I said above, just about anything steering/brake/clutch/heater related), a turbo designed to fit in a particular spot on a LHD car may suddenly find all that stuff has been moved on the RHD versions and there is no room there any more.

Here are multiple threads showing that LHD turbo kits almost always don't fit RHD cars.....

  7. Looking at the photos it looks like most of the plumbing is routed under the engine so I don't see any real fitment issues but as I said send them an email.

But remember that ZR-series engines have exhaust etc on the firewall-side, which is where all the stuff I mentioned exists, which is why it can be a problem when you go to fit a turbo kit designed for one "hand" on the other - back in the A-series days when the exhaust was on the radiator side it didn't matter anywhere near as much

  8. Never thought of that but I wouldn't think there would be any fitment issues as the engine is orientated the exact same way, maybe the steering column might be an issue but I cant say for sure.

Steering column, steering rack, brake booster, brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, brake lines, heater tap, heater lines etc etc is all swapped over to the other side...

  9. ok next time i'll drift into him so he can get some fully hektik green stripes on the doors :P

How will you drift? Maccas trays?

New front rotors arrived on the doorstop the other day, just waiting on pads to go with them (and hopefully do the install this weekend) and the old girl will be back cruising like a champ

  10. Hey Guys,

Recently, i was involved in an accident, in which my Optima Yellow Top battery (Gel type) obtained two big dents on it. I do not see cracks or leaks on it...

Do you think this battery is still safe to use?

Have you contacted Optima? In something potentially as dangerous as this I'd be going straight to the manufacturer, not relying on internet "wisdom".

  11. better not go through broke road, surface is prttey bad there heaps of potholes..

Haven't been down the Broke-Pokolbin section in a while, but the Pokolbin/Lovedale part (which had more potholes than a teenager has pimples) has been mostly fixed recently, so wouldn't surprise me if the whole lot got done.

In saying that, no road out that way is fantastic (Wollombi to Cessnock is bad in places too), but there isn't really any way around it apart from turning around and going back (not that Central Mangrove - Wollombi is baby-skin smooth either)

  12. On the other side as well, E10 and 91 are almost the same, 1% difference in ethanol/petrol whichever way you look at it..

    10% :p

Also, since the OP is in Victoria it is a slightly different matter - NSW E10 is usually 91 RON (even with the ethanol added, due to a government mandate), in other states I don't believe there is the same restriction and you'll often get 94/95RON E10 (which is closer to Premium)

    • Thanks 1
  13. There is little economy difference between 91, 95 and 98, you'll probably have greater fluctuations in a week-to-week basis just due to traffic than you would from the improved economy of one over the other.

  14. Dear All,

Was looking for a thread for this kind of discussion and I cant find it. Please let me know if there is a thread for this topic.

Here it goes. I was reading about the difference between E10, 91, 95, and 98. According to drive.com where they have a test of commodore (I know we can compare the commodore with camry but that's the only report i have read). Drive.com reckons E10 provides 10-20% fuel saving as compare to the others.

I am keen to know which fuel gives the savings? Please share.

I think you'll find it is actually the other way around - E10 has a price saving of ~2% per L compared to regular unleaded, but economy is up to 10% worse, hence why ethanol-blended fuels are often called "false economy" - they cost less to fill the tank (which makes you think you're saving money) but you're actually filling the tank up more often, maybe not often enough to realise until you start adding up costs over several months.

  15. Yeh well by the time I stuff around installing a cable under the trim and into a centre console - at the end of the day it's still going to need a cable to plug into that point so I have freedom to move the phone around inside the car... Hence why I'm thinking just an output at the front of the unit.

That's why you pay an installer :P

I've done my fair share of backyard installs (3.5 in total) and can't really be bothered doing any more, especially these days when you need to run GPS units, handsfree microphones, Bluetooth receivers, RCAs and power lines to amps etc etc)

  16. Not sure about Pioneer, but Kenwood definitely have units with a front 3.5mm input, we've got a Kenwood DNX5360 DVD/NAV unit in the Soarer and I use the front jack to play music off my SGS4.

EDIT: Actually, looking at that unit it has a rear AuxUSB input, so you can run a USB cable through the dash to somewhere like the ashtray or centre console to allow you to plug your phone/iPod in etc. Looks a bit neater that way, and if you really want to go all-out you can cannibalise a dock/cradle and make a car-mount for your iPhone (Kenwood do iPod/iPhone cables that plug into the back of the unit and can charge your phone too, and I bet Pioneer would as well)
