Just an update on my mileage... Ticked over to 157,800kms last night, over 20,000kms since my last post in October. She still runs like new, fairly smooth at idle and a consistent average fuel consumption of 9.5-10.5L/100km. Not bad considering I drive about 80km each weekday with only 20 of those kilometres being on the Freeway. I keep putting it off but I will reward her soon with a full detail and tinted windows.
  2. G'day all, I am a Camry driver but am looking to help my sister buy her first car in the next 12 months or so. I am set on recommending the Toyota Echo to her - I drove one for a week whilst on holiday in Queensland last year and was very much impressed by the zip, economy and the fact it felt like I was driving something bigger. The clutch took some getting use to, its much lighter and has less travel than my Touring, but I was sad to hand the car back! We are looking at the sedan in the Series II model (post 2003?) and am just wondering what to look for and what sort of maintenance these cars require - e.g. do they have a timing belt? Cheers.
  3. Thats excellent economy in the City for an engine that size. My Grandpa has a 2000 Magna with the 3.5L engine and in the City he generally averages in the 13-14L/100km mark and that is being conservative with take offs, etc. What makes me laugh is at the time Mitsubishi claimed the 3.5L was more economical than a four cylinder but that is not showing with age! I have also heard rumours the Aurion is to get direct injection with the next update (can anyone confirm or deny?) so it should be interesting to see how much this improves efficiency.
  4. I have never used E10 in my Camry and no matter how high petrol prices get, I refuse to use it. I'm suspicious of how well these blends are measured and am always weary of where independents like United Fuel here in Melbourne source their fuel from. Unlike NSW and QLD, the independents are the only brands to sell E10 at the present time. I have tried a range of fuels in my car to varying success. I now religiously use Mobil 6000 (96RON) and have found this to give the best balance between extra performance and economy. Each time I fill up, I calculate my fuel consumption (distance travelled divided by litres used) and am consistently getting anything between 8.8-10.5L/100km. The worst fuel I have tried is Shell V-Power. I honestly could not tell what the hype was about, the rough idling and poor economy really surprised me. What was even worse was the long queue due to the four cents off discount offered through Coles.
  5. Interesting to note Holden has come out with plans to build and sell a hybrid in Australia by 2010. The articles I have read are sketchy - they talk about a Commodore hybrid but then the spokesperson says it is one model they might possibly look at.
  6. I have Falken ZE329's fitted to my car, they have been on since I bought it. They are aimed at the performance market and have a silica compound for improved wet handling but have very little compromise in smoothness and noise suppression. I'm due to replace my front two tyres - have been quoted between $95 and $115 for the ZE329's.
  7. I get anything between 9-11L/100km in my 1999 Camry. Its a manual which probably explains the good economy. I drive from Nunawading to Port Melbourne and back each weekday (about 70-80km per day) - the morning is all suburban/city driving whilst in the afternoon I usually use the freeway for about 15km of the trip to balance out the type of driving I do. I filled up tonight after doing 587km on a tank - not bad considering I had been leaving a bit later each morning for work and hitting far heavier traffic. My car also ticked over to 148,000kms today - hopefully a bit more life left in her just yet.
  8. I take it you have the stock Fujitsu TEN head unit? The same thing happened to mine - the screen light simply turned off one night. I believe they are sealed units and from experience, Toyota prefer not to play around with them. Perhaps try JB-HiFi or Stratfield?
  9. Any ideas on how to program two stage unlock? I just tried it following the instructions in the manual but it just ended up cancelling out my remotes and thus I needed to reprogram both of them.
  10. I own a 99 Touring series and its a manual. My girlfriend has just purchased an automatic 99 Vienta VXi and it appears to be much quieter engine wise (almost silent). I have also noticed my air conditioning is quite noisy at times and contributes greatly to the noise from my engine however this is not present in the VXi. My main question is to do with noise levels and is there any difference between a manual and automatic 1MZ-FE in this respect.

1999 Touring. Bought it in Nov 06 with 110, 200kms on the clock and last night clicked over to 134,600kms. Have done two interstate trips and often clock up a minimum of 300kms a week. I'm sure it still has some life left in it!
  12. I'm driving a 99 model.
  13. My 130,000km service is coming up and I need new wiper blades. Every service my mechanic replaces them but often the blades use do not last more than three months and they are quite noisy. I am willing to spend a bit extra to get something decent and was wondering if anyone can recommend a wiper blade? All I require is something that will last a while and something that is quiet when wiping back and forth. Cheers.
  14. The backlight on the radio of my 99 Camry Touring went out suddenly this evening. The radio is a Fujitsu TEN, the same as found in the Vienta Grande. The radio and antenna still work fine, it is just the backlight for the display that has gone out. When the headlights are on, the controls for the radio still illuminate. Any ideas on what I should be looking at exactly?
  15. G'day all, My name is John and I am new to the forums. I am 18 years old and live in Melbourne. I currently drive a manual 1999 Camry Touring, which I have now owned for two months. Cheers.
