Hi all,

I have been reading through a number of the posts on this forum for a little while now with keen interest, as I have been considering getting an Aurion for a fair while now.

Finally, just over the weekend I bit the bullet and forked out the cash for a brand new Aurion Touring SE.

From what I can tell from everyones posts, there are very few issues to really be concerned on with regards to strange behaviour and noises, and things breaking etc. One thing I have noticed many comment about is the sound system, which I would consider upgrading if the bass is as bad as everyone says. I would like to put some standard 6-inch speakers in (as opposed to oval 6.5's), as I already have some high quality Pioneer splits and 3-ways in the Magna, plus a sub. Does anyone even know if this is possible? 6.5's IMO do not have the most natural sound typically, so I would prefer not to have to purchase new ones of those. The head unit I would also hope in future to upgrade, but I would like a unit that can still integrate with the existing steering wheel controls.

The car is coming hopefully this weekend, depending on when it is out of the factory. I also got an additional 3 years warranty on it, metallic paint and floor mats (all for no extra cost) and the extra paint protection (the one that includes UV tinted windows).

One thing I am curious about though, is how is the insurance like on the Aurion? My old Mitsubishi Magna was covered under 3rd party by AAMI (wasn't worth much, so couldn't justify comprehensive). I was told that for insurance the cost will not be all that much different from my old Magna for comprehensive, and being 21, obviously costs will still be a little higher than the norm anyway.

I'm hoping this is the right choice, as I've only ever driven second hand cars!

i suggest u change the whole system in one time, rather than putting speakers in now, and sub, which u will need the converter, cost around $150, exclude labour. then u buy new HU, u will need to pay again for labour, and converter wont be used, bcoming a waste.

Original speaker if not wrong, is 6x9. U gotta rethink about 6.5 or 6... nowadays, ppl use 6.5x6.5, even for SQ..

Integrate steering wheel control, possible to mod so tat will work for volume and stuff, i DONT THINK can work for the speedo stuff. Basically cost $200(exclude labour).

I had another plan for installing aftermarket HU, and still make the speedo stuff works, but it doesnt worth it, too much trouble and labour time. i didnt even bother to make the volume work, for $300, i rather spend for deadening.

also IMP, bass from sub and bass from speaker woofer is NOT the same. if u think u get can get better sound by adding a sub woofer into the car, for playing woofer(from speaker's) sound, its a bit wrong concept.

I recon u read around this forum before asking, there is a lot of info bout audio mod for aurion in this section.

Yeah I had read around the forum... but there isn't too much mention of going to 6 inches as opposed to 6x9s (sorry mistyped in my original post). I agree about the sound deadening, as it does definitely make an improvement on sound. I figure being a new car, it would however still be nice to retain all the features including the steering wheel controls.

The main reason I want to upgrade the HU, is because I tend to use the iPod a fair bit for music, rather than CD's, which are quite inconvenient. The stock head unit doesn't seem to have any input, other than the mp3 cd support, which is pretty much standard these days. I have noticed recently on the website that there is actually a new head unit available that isn't mentioned in the brochures, which includes an aux-in jack on the front. I'm going to try and find out the price for one of these from my dealer soon.

Either way, it's just a small consideration at the moment, as my old car used to have atrocious sound on it initially, so I am in a way used to it lol

yeah we have had a few issues with them in the past... main thing I'm worried about is losing rating from moving between insurance companies. Plus I did that skilled drivers course with AAMI a while back, which got me a discount from the insurance.

We had a Honda Odyssey that was written off by somebody running a red light, speeding and talking on a phone all at once... they slammed into the front side of the car and bent the wheel right under the car (more than $20k in repairs). Because there were no cameras at that intersection, the person who ran the red light protested and AAMI made us pay the excess, even though it wasn't our fault. After months of fighting we eventually reversed that decision, but it still should not have happened in the first place! Other than that though, we haven't had too many issues with them though...

I'm not sure what RACV is like these days, but I don't tend to hear too much about them with regards to them causing problems...

Congratulations on your purchase . :toast: try the nrma insurance website and put in your details and you will get an estimate straight away. Also if you have a no claim bonus you should be able to transfer it over to your new insurance.

It really depends how much you're prepared to spend. I agree with Dannywss, it's not worth changing the current head unit, especially with the integrated steering controls. I upgraded my sound system. Added front splits, rear coaxials, couple of subs and couple of amps to power them. You will need a convertor to hook the head unit with the amps, etc. The converted in my system is the Rockford 3Sixty.1. It's about $500 retail. It's got an AUX, so it should work with the ipod. It's just a matter where you get it installed.

As for the speakers, some modifification will need to be done for the 6.5 inch to fit. Speak to a specialist car audio place. They wouldn't have any trouble with the install.

If you're in victoria, checkout www.glprosound.com.au

These are the guys who upgraded my aurion and i'm happy with the results. Again, it's just a matter of how much you want to spend.

Well with new headunits these days theres some with a remote port/interface, which can be ported to connect to the remote controls on a car. (just a matter of connecting which pin to what. With the Aurion its just VOL+/-, Channel or TRACK +/-, and SRC, im pretty sure the remote port will have these being a standard function on all HU's

Example check out http://clarion.com/au/en/products/2007/aud...1866289522.html

and http://www.alpine.com.au/products/product.asp?modelID=233

And im pretty sure Audio installers can hookit up easy

Thanks for all the replies guys :D

I do live around Melbourne, so I will have a look at that place mentioned for audio installs (depending on what the sound is like, and if it really is extremely annoying lol).

I will also take a look at the NRMA site and see what it reckons hehe. I just got the call from the dealer a few minutes ago saying they have the car there now, and that they will work on getting everything ready by Saturday :)

Looking forward to all this! hehehe

depends on which country u come from, i think there r quite a few people here loves Audiofx.

$500 for rockford, yea, UNLESS u r a REAL SERIOUS SQ, its not necessary for tat. i did a similar from alpine around $400(not installed), i rather change the HU, coz HU is VerY important to change FIRST STEP.

i dont think yr rating will change if u swap insurance company. Just came back from picking up my car from AAMI, have to say, FARK THEM! Eddie in Moorabbin, DONT EVER LET TAT PERSON TOUCH YR CAR!!! He ask panel shop to repaint the front lip, but from side, the colour is CORRECT, from front look, ITS DIFFERENT?! FUK!! u know why? coz they paint only the side +_+ HOW DUMB IS TAT?! THIS IS the 2nd time i send the car back!

I scold him straight away, and he say he has to send the car back to same panel shop and paint again... yea, wasting my time and money. FUK AAMI!

back to audio, u can start off with yr budget for audio, then we can start easier from there...

Yeah AudioFX, try the one on queensberry road in the city, i think they may have done toyota's (Given they are just across the street to Melb City Toyota....)

Another good place is TowerAudio down at Oakleigh, bit more pricey but outstanding workmanship..

Avoid Gary'sCarRadio, they damaged my side mirror interior piece on my skyline trying to put in a tweeter and cabling stuckout from all over the place...

How does the warranty get affected by changing speakers? Obviously the speakers won't be covered any more, but does anything else become void?

Also... with AAMI i discovered the price is almost $400 more for comprehensive... so forget that - i'll look elsewhere! RACV seems to be ok though... how do they deal with the claims?

I thought that AAMI was pretty reasonable, i'm 22 and got $1181 as my premiem on rating 1

How did you get that price? I can't even get rating 1, despite the fact that i have never had an accident... it's very annoying! Best quote I have found so far is from RACV for $1367, on rating 3...

Family has other cars ensured with AAMI so they bumped me up to rating one

only thing is that you pay an EXTRA $450 on top of their $500 excess when you make a claim so that's $950 all up

I just did this same thing, and they quoted $1683!!!

This is being an existing customer, with my whole family covered under AAMI, and they said only rating 2... i'm really unimpressed with that price, as i was quoted the $1367 by RACV last night. $1367 i can live with, but $1683 is just too much!

I think I will just go with the RACV coverage though, as I pick up the car tomorrow and obviously it's not so good to drive without insurance in such a new car!

Well my dad when he went through RACV paid $600 on rating one, but get this, excess was $400 with $1700 on top for anyone under 21yrs of age, which was my sister, it was like wtf.

Im 25 paying $795 comprehensive for my Zr6.

Geeze that's awful! better hope to never have to make a claim!

$795 is pretty damn awesome though - pity i aint over that magic "25" barrier yet where insurance finally becomes fair :P

Oh well... I went with the RACV coverage, so I can be fairly sure that it will be covered when i leave the dealer :)

Guys, try www.bingle.com.au. My ZR6 was $571/yr (28, rating 1, $500 excess).

Good service and very easy to use too.

Its online only and if you claim you gotta put the claim in online yourself, but it appears no more painful than having to deal with insurance companies over the phone.
