I had the exact same problem a couple of months ago. I was ******-off after my previous experience with an independent mechanic so I took it to Toyota for the ol' TLC. $380 + labour and I had a new gearbox speed sensor. But before you go down this route, if you have an OBD1 vehicle you should obtain a SST (aka. a paperclip) and bridge e1 and te1 on your diagnostics box, turn the ignition to 'on' (but do not start) and read the number of flashes you get from the check engine light. It should be black, unlike when you normally put it to the 'on' position. Wait a few seconds. If you get four flashes, pause, two flashes, that's a code for the ECU not having received a signal from the speed sensor for about 8 seconds (your sensor is dead).

You do get use to driving without the speedo, so it's not as dramatic as it sounds. You use the force :P and keep an eye on the tacho.

P.S. If you are in the Melbourne area DO NOT take it to Patterson Cheney. My receipt had the wrong MODEL, wrong COLOUR, some utterly ambiguous comments and wrong pricing (they were not able to source a promised & quoted part, yet the 'service' still cost the same amount). Due to having put the wrong model I suspect, a brake caliper overhaul took 5 working days. They didn't even bother to clear the code 42. I've heard good things about the city dealership, however...

edit: your '92 is OBD1

  • 1 month later...

how did you go with this mate? all fixed?

the first time I had this problem, my mechanic told me the prob was with the cable and sold me a new cable. it worked fine for about a year and a bit. Now my speedo aint working again and when I took it to another mechanic, he told me the problem aint with the cable cause after they fix it back, drove it for a while, it fell out again.

Well, I suppose I ain't speeding if I'm driving at zero km/h :whistling:

  • 4 weeks later...

yer man all fixed

see what happened the gear that goes into to the gearbox had somehow unscrewed

so what i did was screw it back in TIGHT =]

aint going anywhere now

now everything on the car is good

except for the small tapping from the timing cover

but thats not important

if it snaps

WARANTY cause guys before i bought the car didnt do it right =]

haha

and a few squeaking/knocking noises from my door trims which i have to secure

and i really bad knock/rattling from behind the glove box

so i gotta strip all that down when i have time

not major just annoying

fun isnt it =]
