89 Celica probs

Hey all I have a 89 celica ST162R and it seems to be having a problem. . . any info will be helpfull

When I get up it ( 5000 - 6000 RPM ) My charge battery light comes on and the vault meter goes insane, from in the blue to 18 vaults. . . and I have no Idea what it is, the light stays on untill I shut the car off and start it again, then it wont do it for about 5 mins. When the light is on the vault meter dont drop neither does the prerformance. . . but that light there gives me the poops and I have no idea what it is. My father says its the terminals ( sp ) but I just cleaned them up and its still doin it. Any ideas ?

there are a few things it could be....

I'd start by getting wiring diagrams etc. and going through you dash with a fine tooth combe. then engine bay etc. fuses and all your important measuring modules as well.

test your battery and your alternator and check all the fuses

could be a alt reg starting to bugger

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the Regulator on the Alternator (got it checked at auto-electricians).

Got a quote to replace the regulator and checked again for $145, and got a quote from Repco for a brand new alternator for $297... I went for the new one. Cause if the diodes are stuffed as well, I'd have spent $145 for nothing...

I would suggest getting your alternator check at the auto-E's, it was free and they just did a quick check for me and told me where the prob was.
