I got a new 08 Yaris two months ago and Toyota have no idea what the issue is. They had it for a little while and came to the typical mechanical conclusion ;) that if "I did not hear it, it does not exist" and my wife and I are hearing things.

After the car has been going a while - half an hour (which is why they can't get it) I hear a very high pitched whistle when the revs reach 3000. The sound stops on idle but if you are stationary and rev it you can hear it in the cabin. If you tun on the air con, it goes within 10 seconds or so and will not come back while the air con is on. The whistle can be heard faintly to clearly in the cabin and it is exceptionally irritating and frustrating for a car new car. (2 months old, started at 700 kms)

Next time, if the car has been sitting a few hours you will not hear it so it only occurs when it has been running. It may not occur very day but when it does it is obvious.

Anyone have any vague idea at the direction Toyota should look? I leave home early before the dealer opens and return well after they close the service department. The young mechanics lack patience and are busy as well so you can uinderstand they can not just drive it around all day.

Sounds some kind of pulley.

Get all the belt's checked, especially the cooling fan belt (If there is one)

Looks like a pulley as I got Toyota to listen when it actually happened. There are several but they will need to find which one. I post this for future owners and will update it hopefully when it is fixed. Is not a serious issue otherwise it would grind.

With the 1ZZ-FE engine if you give it a good strapping it starts to make a little ringing noise too, that might explain why yours only does it after half an hour of driving

I have a 3 month old 2008 YRS and have exactly the same problem! It has been driving me insane, as it is very intermittent and can either be very apparent or just on the edge of my hearing. Mine appeared about 700km as well and only when the motor is warm, it's most obvious between gear changes when the motor is slowing down from high revs to idle.

I thought it may be something in the dash, as I can only hear it when I am in the car, can't pick it up from under the bonnet. I had mine booked in to be checked out at Toyota, then after I'd been on a corrugated dirt road it went away for a while, so I cancelled it. It has since come back however, although I thought this may indicate something loose in the dash.

I'll see how mine goes, then book it back in again. Good luck and let me know how you go!

HAHA!! Mate... let me tell you.... nowadays toyotas young mechanics are SH*T..... i did the same thing... coz my rollas was making a weird noise at the back... i came back after the service and the service advisor said " THE MECHANICS COULDNT FIND ANYTHING MATE" man... they make it so it sounds like u are the only one that is hearing things... but my brother and mum hears them tooo... so yeh... its either they dont have enough patience to look for it... or they did not do it at all... coz they dont actually get paid to find those kind of minor things .... B)

EDIT: Well not all young toyota mechanics are crap.... some of them are good at what they are doing too... and they really likes the job coz that what they wanna do.... but some of the apprentices does mechanics just to earn money T_T
