Ok here we go, i own two Toyota Celica ST162's, both 1986 models. one was given to me (and got me hooked :P ) approx 1.5 yr's ago, maybe a bit longer, and my second one which is my daily was purchased from melbourne a bit less then a yr ago. ill start from the start and go through with pics and a little explaination to how they are standing currently!

The following pics are the day after i got my second one (named ZR from now on to save confusion). I had the ZR transported to my house from melb on the back of a car carrier truck. it wasnt registered in NSW and would be sold unregistered and i didnt know what condition it was in personally as i bought her off ebay, therefore i didnt want to risk the 15 odd hour drive back home :P

i havent seen this on any other 162 yet... it directs air to the gearbox i think...

so as you can all see, she wasnt rego'd and because it came from a different state, even though it was registered there before it was sold, it had to pass a blue slip...

these are the things i got knocked back on:

"exhaust leak (bolt not tight somewhere - only when cold, when it warms up the metal expands and stops the leak?) ,under body needs degreasing (cause thats HEAPS important and all.....), steerling coupling loose on the rack (a bit of play when you turn the wheel - he saw the bolts that needed tightening but didnt do it for me), one number plate is light out (new bulb needed), wiper blades worn, AND handbrake needs adjusting...."

so all in all, it was nothing major! anyway got right to it and fixed up everything that needed fixing and she passed with flying colours!! Then i got it rego'd and sorted out insurance...

it was such a good feeling taking it for her first (legally registered) drive! felt great, although since i got her felt as tho it lacked it power compared to my 1st one, even though it had less k's and had extractors and bottom end rebuild and a few other things that should have made it a bit faster/more responsive!

First few problems with the car came along. i had to replace the intake mani gaskets, and also had to replace the injectors as one of them had its pintle snapped clean off!! no wonder it was running like a dog!

Next mod that took place was replacing the S53 box with a S54. the old one was feeling a bit tired and popped out of second on deceleration/coming off throttle. also hated going into second gear! I dont know if the box came out of a celica or camry or what but it is in now and feels a million times better! takes alot more and doesnt crunch, pop outta gears, and has slightly better ratios... Brogan (XR Pilot) basically did the swap for me, and i helped inbetween running to the toilet to spew/snap.... the effects of food poisoning.... just like to thank him again for all his help and hard work!!. we started at about 9am and it took about 14 hours all up i think.... was a bitch to change!

also bought and installed a TWM short shifter which made it feel a lot better too! highly recommended!!

So then i had her on the dyno to see what she was putting out at the wheels. the car was feeling a whole lot better by now compared to the day that i got her! heres some pics and a short vid (sorry about the mobile quality) of the ZR on the dyno:

short vid i got on my mobile

The results!!

1st run had a top of 125FWHP without changing anything

on the final run she hit 130.1FWHP so i was pretty happy about that ! the torque was improved a bit as well !!

Next problem i had with her was recent. i moved down to newy and that was the first long trip that i'd taken the ZR on. i had only just serviced her and swapped all fluids etc... it ended up burning all its oil (in a 5 hr trip) and on the way home one of the big end bearing's grabbed.... so i ended up getting my dad to come pick me and the celica up and what should have been a 4 and a half hour trip turned out to be around about the 13 hour mark.... problem after problem lol

So i got the car back to Julius Performance and worked out my options...

I ended up getting the 1st gen 3SGE rebuilt and put back in... during the process it was found out that it had previously been over-heated and rebuilt, but in the process they had overbored it 1mm :P that explained my higher hp that usual on the dyno!!

one month passed and i got the all clear to pick her up! was having withdrawal's from driving it :P i ran it in for 1000km's and then gave it a service and that basically brings me up to how the ZR stands currently!

since then its had a few problems like the timing belt cover seal gettign caught and pulled into the timing belt causing it to skip a lot of teeth!! its happened twice now and had to pull the cover's off twice in about 2 weeks so its getting pretty annoying. there must be a cause to the problem so thats getting inspected now.

its been in the workshop for about 2 weeks now getting a few little things fixed up that went wrong during the rebuild like the a/c doesnt get cold, the timing belt cover seal issue, the rear of the oil pump is leaking quiet heavily and a few other little things like that...

heres a few pics from before it went into the workshop. shes pretty dirty! it had been raining and everywhere was muddy :P

100_2991.jpg

100_2994.jpg

100_2997.jpg

ill update as things progress!!

hopefully i'll have her back from the workshop and she will be problem free :D

looking forward to driving it again...

my first celica's sitting at my parents place, registered but not being put to much use. dad takes her for a spin every now and again so it doesnt rott away lol

my little bro will be getting it when he gets his license so im sure he'll be on the forums at some point!

Cheers for reading!

a small update on the celica. it was making 130.1 hp@front treads and thats pretty high for a gen1 3sge. actually it seems really high. i dont have much technical data to prove this is correct but i do have other proof. One of Brogans (xr pilot from forums) mates owns a SSS pulsar and it had a few minor mods done and it was putting out 108 hp@ the front treads on the same dyno my celica was on (which is the same dyno brogans old celica was on and hit 123fwhp)... which is about what its meant to be putting out (usually between 105 and 110 fwhp) and matches other readings for the same car on different dynos.

therefore i have no reason to believe its not a correct reading... i know its high for a gen1 3sge.

here's a list of things done during the rebuild of my engine:

RebuildInvoice.jpg

It was put back on the dyno 2nite to see how it was running after the rebuild and tune it up, make sure it was running well and adjust the timing...

on the first run the timing was retarded majorly and it ran about 116 fwhp. so we upped the timing to what its meant to be at and it was hitting about 125ish. then we advanced a little more and this was the result:

Fri16thMay2008.jpg

note: i know the dates wrong, it was on the rollers only 2nite....

the red line was the previous from my first time on the dyno a few months back and the blue line was 2nites best run... its not much different at all (less than 2hp) but i just thought i'd chuck it up and show everyone....

MAX: 131.8 FWHP
