Working on my camry

So I got this 1991 camry about a year ago; red, manuel 100k on the clock and in good nick.

It was owned by an old granny, which meant it was looked after, but looked like crap. So I began my attempts to hot it up..

I began on the interior, some nice 6x5 speakers in the back, 4 inches in the dash and a 400w sub and amp in the boot. I tossed on some seat covers, interior neons and started work on re-carpeting. Next was the expensive part.. the exterior, first I was going for a body kit, however I soon found myself facing 2 problems.

1. I live in Australia, the options availible to hot up an old camry are almost non-existant and I didn't really want to pay for a custom kit, I'd rather one made for the car.

2. With stock rims, fitting a body kit would be stupid.

So I began researching and soon found I could pick up this nice set of 16 inch rims off of Ebay imported from america to my front door for around 1200 AUSD.

These rims were clearly labeled as being compatible with a 91 Camry

So I went off and grabbed them... The rims came yesterday and today I decided I'd best 'play it safe' and check to make sure they fit before I go and get some tyres for them. And.. bang, they didn't.. the nuts simply don't line up, the width of the holes on the rim are far too wide for the screws. So I am here, after some help with a few things..

Can/should I get new calipers and whatnot fitted to match the rims..?

Is it common knowledge that camrys in the US and Australia are not the same, or did I just get ripped off?

Cheers for any help guys, so far working on this car has been alot of 'learning it the hard way', but I wasn't expecting to fork out 2 grand for rims that don't even come close to fitting :(

Wow mate that sucks,I'm not sure if US camry's have a different bolt pattern or not but as far as I know they are the same.

Sounds like a typical dodgey Ebay listng :(

Curiouse though, why didn't you just buy some rims for it in Australia??

Also they do make body kits for the gen2 Camry in the US but they don't fit perfect because of the difference in body shape between our two countries, however with a bit of modifying they can be made to fit.

Well every quote I got around here, for a set of 16 inch rims (some of which didn't even look nice at all), were more around the $2500-3000 mark.

Ebay seemed to be the only means of getting a decent set at a good price, and none were available from Australia. I have a mate that used Ebay to grab some rims for his WRX and he has no problems at all, looks like your right I must have just found a dodgy listing <_<

But yeah seems getting a kit is on hold, but I wouldn't have been suprised if an imported body kit needed some adjustments in order to fit properly, just didn't expect to be screwed over on the rims..

Could have instantly told you that those rims wouldn't fit - ADM Camrys are 5x100 stud pattern (same as ST162-205 Celicas, and most 90s Subarus) up until around 2000 I think. Remember that the US got different models to us, also be careful with model years as they are often out compared to us by at least a year or so.

And $2500 is a rip for a set of 16" wheels, I got 16s plus _good_ tyres for my AE102 for just over $1500, you can get closer to the grand mark if you stick with cheaper tyres or more readily available profiles.

^^^ beat me to it ;)

BTW... Some_Random_White_Guy... there are aftermarket parts for the gen 2 Camry... you just have to look. Look up 89Camry in member's rides and you will see...

In my opinion don't ever buy stuff off ebay that ask for that large amount of money. Photos don't always prove the real product...

This is where i bought the wheels on my car from. 17in chrome & tyre package for 1600 + postage. And its important that you look at this as a learning experience. My first mistake cost me almost double yours with a bodykit that was 'apparently' for the Gen 2 camry. So don't lose heart, modding Gen 2's are a lot of fun, and you will find you have to do a lot of modifying of parts yourself to make them fit the car, which is half the fun.

Finding a bolt on kit for the Gen 2 that looks good is virtually impossible. Custom isn't as expensive as you'd think, just make sure you shop around first and go to somewhere that specialises in fitting bodykits.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, I've spent quite a while working on my Gen 2 :)

Wow I got my set of 17's with rubber for $790 fitted (new of course).

Damn just goes to show shopping around really pays.

Cheers for the tips guys, seems I rushed into the purchase without enough research.

Yeah I looked it up and the US' 1991 model is actually Australia's 1992, and of course in 92 the stud pattern changed <_<

Bit of a slap in the face when the first thing you attempt to add ends up not fitting, but with luck I'll be able to re-sell the rims and pick up another set a bit cheaper.

That is a nice ride 89Camry, similar to what I am hoping to get mine too eventually, I'll have a look at tempetyres and see if I can find anything that might fit.

Well I've sold my old rims for $700 which I thought wasn't too bad since I paid $600 not including freight. Now I just need to wait for paypal to stop processing the payment and start giving me the cash <_<

Anyhow, looking at tempetyres, I've noticed only 1 would fit my camry and it doesn't look real flash..

Thats a 16 inch, I've got stock 14s on there now.. I've found some awesome looking 17 inch rims for a good price that will fit, but I am worried whether or not they would be legal, screw up my speedo too much, or rub against the struts underneath..

14-17" seems a bit of an extreme jump to me, what do you guys suggest?

you'll be right :whistling:

how about Camry GTP 17" mags...

wow that pic is a tad....odd?

ride height HUGE and the tyres are a tad under inflated for 17' wheels, but very shiny tyre shine though.

  • 2 weeks later...

As long as the diameter of your new rims and tyres matches the stock... you're all legal mate.

You'd be on what now? 205 x 65 R14??

I reckon you'd be able to go 205 or 215 x 40 R17s... when you lower it, you may have to get the guards rolled under possibly.

Hit up Greg... he's spent A LOT of money on his car... in and out of shops!! lol... (aka 89Camry)

Nice Choice. I'm a big fan of the multi spoke wheels.

I've got 17 x 7's on my car, and they're not illegal to the best of my knowledge, but I am in Qld.

Hope it goes well for you this time!

just wondering 89camry, how much as your sv21 done? (mileage?)

rare to see a delicious modded sv21 like yours around these days. it was also my first car so i get emotionally attached to them  hehe

watch the hub size as they are different between camry and wrx as well as the wheel offset wrx is about 53 while camry around 35
