Broken Trunk Cable

Hi guys:

The trunk cable on my 1991 Camry snapped today. I still have the cable and the hatch (which the cable is supposed to be connected to) but I need to get the cable back on to it. I have taken a pic of my hatch (without the cable on it) so you guys can have a better understanding of what I am trying to say.

What I want to know is, do I have to put a new cable or can I re-connect the old one back, because there is a lot of slack on it. Also, I need to re-attach the hatch back onto my car, which isnt as simple as it sounds. I need to take off some parts of the trunk in order to get the bolt in there.

Can someone please help me with this? If I havent been as clear as I think, please reply and let me know if you need more clarification.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Mate. Take it easy on the posting okay. Posting numerous times isn't going to help anyone. Some questions take time to get the right answers since some people may not have come across such an issue.

Besides getting a new cable, you can try to clamp a tiny nut and bolt to the end of the cable that snapped (if it still reaches the mechanism) and that will prevent the cable coming out of the latch mechanism; kind of like how that little bead at the end of the cable is, except it will be a nut and bolt. It's a bit tough to explain, but in a situation like this, you need to use creativity. Kind of like when you snap a brake cable on some push bikes. You have no other option than to replace the cable unless you can be creative enough to figure something out for yourself.

Sorry about the multiple replies. I didnt know it got posted that many times. Is there any specific thing or wire that will let me clamp the two separated cables back together?

Could someone also help me advising me on how to get the hatch back onto my car? Its kind of hard. You cant just put a nut and bolt on it because there is basically a call. I was thinking of maybe a C nut?

I posted 2 pics of some bolts that I think would work. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you guys have better ideas or alternative options to what I am thinking?

Here the pics of bolts I am thinking of using to reattach the hutch the car

Thats a hex or V bolt...

Thats a U Bolt

Has anyone tried to trick with one of these 2 type?

Ive been trying to look online for a pic of a nut and bolt that can clamp the cable back together. Do you have any pic of that kind of clamp? Or know what it is called?

I am sure DJKOR wasn’t referring to any specific type of bolt. What he is saying you need to be creative, improvise.

If there is enough cable you could pass the cable thorough the hole and spin it around a bolt, then put the nut on to clamp the cable in place. Not any particular bolt, just a small one. I know it sounds dodgy, but short of buying a new cable you have to bodge up somehow.
