Strange sound from the headunit

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I purchased one of those headunits off ebay and installed it about 6 months ago but starting about 1 week ago it started to make a strange sound when you turn it on the first time of the day. Its like a grinding sound and lasts for about 10 secs.

So it is because its cold?

becuase its headunit is heating up?

or is mine defected?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Mine does that too... it sort of sounds like the fan in the unit is struggling a bit. I just turn mine off and then back on again, sometimes a few times, until it stops. Dodgy though....

Mine does this as well. I agree it also sounds like a dodgy fan motor in a computer but I think it may be the actual DVD drive spinning the disk. Mine does it from 10 - 20 seconds and has only started a month ago.

Mine too. Bought from Autome & installed at Christmas time. To me it sounds like the disc spinning up. As stated above, quietens down after 10-20 seconds. Started happening about 2 weeks ago when the weather here in Brisbane started getting cold (?).

I should be getting my new Satnav sometime early this week. I'll check out any fan on the unit once I do. Although they're now considerably higher quality then they were previously, I still believe the manufacturers would be cutting costs where-ever they can.

My old Auspack unit did this when the temperature around the unit was fairly cold. Would go away after several seconds though. I believe the Auspack unit had a cooling fan in it and I just figured it was a cheap brand probably with crap bearings.
