Hi guys,I live in wentworthville near parramatta. I'm after a vehicle which can do a bit of offroading like the beach and the snow and muddy surfaces. Does the rav4 have an option to switch on 4wd and lock it or is it automatic when it detects slippage? The kluger seems to have better safety packages like reverse camera standard across all models and extra air bags too.Only thing is that its too darn big.Thats why we were after the rav4,now is the basic 4cylinder powerful enough to climb hills or will we need a v6 for that? Have read about the v6 in rav4 being a bit thirsty. Please do fill me in,all advice will be appreciated. Also when is the best time in the year to buy a new vehicle to get good discounts and any particular dealers or sites? Ta

How often will you be offroading?

The RAV4 V6 does have down hill assist control. It's a button next to the steering wheel. If you do go offroad just remember to remove most of the pressure out of the tyres. Also i would recommend you change your tyres from stock to Bridgestone Dueler A/T D694 because of the extra traction along uneven roads. I have the D694 on the Landcruiser when i go offroad and it's excellent.

If i were in your case i would get the new/used Prado or wait for the FJ cruiser which is pretty much a mini version of the Prado.

Hey Buff I wont be doing it too often, just once in a while. So Prado and the FJ arent for me. I would have been happy with a 4cyl but Ive read a lot of reviews from owners saying its underpowered for its porky body.I think I read those words on this very forum somewhere. It may make sense coz the cr-v which I test drove and found lacking in power is 125 and torque around 220 and the rav4 is similar,so it must be underpowered for red light starts and hill climbs.I have a yaris sedan and the reason i want to change it is the same- it cant climb, its always hunting for gears.Any other alternatives?Ta

Since you won't be going offroad that often the Rav4 V6 will be able to fit for your needs. Just search on youtube rav4 offroad and you will see how much abuse the rav4 can take. Light offroad will be fine just don't go bashing the rav4 too hard and you will be fine.

I've got a RAV V6. I don't consider it to be expensive on fuel.

In fact, touring along around 110 k's I would say that it would be

no more expensive that the 4 cylinder. Considering that the 4 would

need to work harder than the 6 when laden with holiday gear.

Mind you, the only time that it has been off road is when I used it

on dirt roads in the west of NSW. It still has the standard, noisy,

tyres which are just tyres.

Thanx guys for all ur advice. In fact I called the dealer in parra yday and he told me that he has no more v6's left as they are all sold out.He tells me that he has a 4cyl and it has no issues climbing uphill with a full load. That sounds more like a desp salesman talk.Yes I prefer a v6 but since my budget is under $40K,Im not sure I will get a new one.May have to settle for a used v6.But thats dodgy,if the previous owner has bashed up the vehicle, then I will have to take a mechanic and get it checked.Oh bother! Anyway ta for ur time guys, appreciate it.

I got my brand new CV6 for $38900 drive away so it's possible. The CV6 does around 8-9L/100km at 110km/h with hard acceleration.

Hi,

Where and when did you get your cv6? Sounds like a very good deal as now theyre offering driveaways at 41k. I testdrove the 4ycl and an sx6.Boy what a world of difference.Like someone wrote, "it just blasts the competition away". This is what Im after. Now the sx6 that I test drove is a 2009 model with 18k on odo and the salesman said it was a toyota managers car.The price was 35990 on the net but when I went there they had dropped it to 33900 and the guy said we could get it down further.Something amiss here? Why is the vehicle so lowly priced? Is it just me or is there something dodgy going on?Will obviously get a mechanic to chek it.Any recommendations for mech in Sydney? The v6 is a superb engine.Do let know, would appreciate hearing from experienced guys like you.Ta

You need to haggle a bit more with the price and try a number of dealers.

at the moment alot of dealers are trying to get rid of 2009/2010 stock

^ What ronnyboy said. You have to go to many Toyota dealers and see which one is the cheapest.

Apparently there's a new RAV4 coming out 2011/2012 so if i were you i would wait a bit and see what the new one will look like.

Yes I read that it would be in 2012 2nd quarter and I need to buy soon. With my budget not going to go up next year,I guess I will have to go for a used one only.

From all I searched, there seems to be only v6 around in that price from 2009.

Also guys,do I do an independent inspection before fixing the price or vice versa? With the trade in,do I talk about it after the price has been fixed? Will they allow that? Ta

Best if you inspect/test drive the car before fixing the price. Trade in will be a massive lose for you. They offer you a stupid price and the bargaining of the new car is minimal because they think you don't have money.

Have a look at all these cars. Don't know how you missed them

The last link is looks like the best offer imo. You can haggle the cost as well so it will even be lower than what it is.

I4 vs V6, it all depends on what you need it for. For off-roading, you don't need speed. You don't want the wheels to spin. Some of the best off road vehicles have smaller engines.

Toyota put a new 4 cylinder engine in the RAV beginning in 2009. When we purchased our 2009, we drove both the I4 and V6. We didn't really feel enough difference to justify the V6.

The V6 is only faster when going in a straight line. The basic suspension on the RAV is the limiting factor.

We live up here in North America where they offer a "Sport" version with a different suspension (not sure if this is offered there?). The RAV4 Sport drives very differently from the other versions. It's a blast going around corners and driving curvy roads. I wouldn't even consider the V6 without the Sport suspension....the regular RAV suspension just can't handle it.

But the Sport suspension is not good for off-roading. When we were out in Yellowstone National Park last summer, just driving up unpaved roads was not pleasant with the stiff suspension. But driving around the mountains on paved roads was a blast. The previous year we took our RAV4 Sport I4 out to Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove on some very steep roads (up over 4000 m altitude) and the I4 engine was outstanding. Never did it leave us wanting more power.

The bottom line....the RAV4 is not intended/designed to go off-road. Just because it can temporarily send power to all four wheels does not mean it can go off-road. The RAV4 is a car that looks a little like a SUV/truck.

We love ours!

- You definitely want the extra torque when you go offroad. If your wheels spin then that means your offroad driving technique is wrong or you have the wrong tyres on.

- Unfortunately the best offroads are all nice big I6 or V8 turbo diesel not small baby engines.

- If you didn't find a difference between the I4 and V6 then you're joking me.

The last link is looks like the best offer imo. You can haggle the cost as well so it will even be lower than what it is.

I missed all of them as I had put year from 2008 to max and price max of 36k and kms less than 20k.Anyway ta for all the links, appreciate it! Yes the last ones a good deal.Ta again

If cars advertised as 2010 but the MY is 09,should I be haggling for a 2009 car price with similar condition and kms?

With the last link i think the maximum you can go down to is roughly 35-35.5k. It's hard to haggle with used cars compared to new cars.

A dealer is offering $33990 for a 2009 sx6 Rav4 with 18k on odo but excluded stamp duty and transfer fees.Is that a good price? I thought used vehicles dont have stamp duty? Plus the vehicle is a vic reg and when I tried putting provided vin no and reg no,nothing comes up.Is that normal?

I guess you are looking at this one

Stamp duty is 4% ($1360) and transfer fee is who knows what. In the end it will cost just more than the 2010 sx6 which is newer and has lower kms.

Yes mate thats the one.In NSW its 3% and I think xfr fees are $21 I guess. So u mean to say that if I go in for a new one then its cheaper? Take a look at a new sx6 price on discountnewcars http://www.discountnewcars.com.au/toyota/toyota-rav4-gsa33r-sx6-wagon-5dr-auto-5sp-4x4-3-5i-toyo10fd.aspx

Also mate, with a new car price offered are all these things like stamp duty, xfr fees and rego included? With the used sx6 on ,what should be a price negotiated if it has to be a good deal in your opinion.Ta

Toyota put a new 4 cylinder engine in the RAV beginning in 2009. When we purchased our 2009, we drove both the I4 and V6. We didn't really feel enough difference to justify the V6.

Strange... I have driven both Rav4 CV and CV6 there is quiet a difference in acceleration between the two...
