Hi

My amp stopped turning on a few months ago and I have only just gotten around to checking in detail what is happening as i finally found my multimeter.

it appears I am only getting 4v from the battery to the amp but it is not the fuse as when I tested the voltage on the amp side of the fuse I had 12v is there anything that I could do to check where I am losing voltage along the cable without having to remove the whole thing.

I have a '98 corolla

When you are testing the +12v line for your amp, where are you sourcing the ground from (as in what are you touching with the negative lead of the multimeter)? If you are sourcing your ground from the negative terminal of the amplifier, I would try connecting your negative lead of your multimeter to another piece of bare metal on the car body. If you then read 12v, I would be checking to see how well you have grounded your amplifier.

Thanks for .the help but I tried different points for the negative and got the same result I dont think that is the issue as i was getting 12volts on the remote

any other ideas

Check the connection at the battery ie. cleanliness, terminals tight etc.

Disconnect the positive cable at the amp, whack the multimeter straight from that to BARE metal, i can't stress that enough.

If there is still a low voltage test the resistance in the power cable from the amp side of the fuse.

Check all connections and at a last resort the cable may need replacing.

For help with diagnosing post what figures you get at each point after each test, on here.
