Hi guys,

Looking to buy a YARIS, was wondering if the 1NZ-FE was SOHC or DOHC?

and could anyone comment on how punchy the engine is? as it's 80kw on a 1070kg chassis.

Kind Regards,

Like all Toyota F-heads, it is technically DOHC but only one camshaft is driven by the timing belt/chain - the other one is driven by a scissor gear arrangement off the first

It's not the same car but similar. I bought a echo sportivo which uses same motor and I was pleasantly surprised with the power it's enough to get around easily in manual form and to have a bit of fun. The echo sportivo is a little lighter though

the 1NZ-FE is a great little motor, and the 80kw is plenty to move a yaris around.

1NZ-FE's are chain drive and both cams are driven by the timing chain

Interesting that Toyota abandoned their old practice of scissor-gearing then....

The engine is great for city driving and it's mostly okay for the occasional motorway up to about 100km/h, but you won't be able to do heroic overtaking manoeuvres at that speed.

It should be pretty frugal engine - but it needs some sustained running to get anywhere near the quoted fuel consumption figure. I drive stop start < 25 mins in the morning and evening and get about 7.5 L/100km according to the trip computer.
