Timing chain rattle on startup

dba

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, new member.

I drive a 2007 Kluger Grande and for some time have had a momentary rattle on start up. Recently I split an oil hose and since having it fixed the rattle has gotten louder. It only lasts a second or two and then stops. If the engine is warm, there is no rattle. I have been told it could be the timing chain tension, the lifters, or the timing chain guides. All of those sound expensive. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks Trent, have been doing the research as you suggest and found a suggestion of increasing revs to 2000rpm before turning off engine. Will try it for a while to see how that goes.

Before i left Toyota, the cost was around $450 per gear (you need 2) and i think it was around 12 hours labour. Yes, engine out to reach the rear vvti gear.
