Hi, New here!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Have had my 'rolla for one week now and loving it but have a few questions. (I tried asking these at the dealer but they did not seem too know much !)

9000rpm red line on the Sportivo is that only possible if you get a engine rebuild ? I thought they did hit 9000rpm but it seems to be only 8k :/ I remember hearing somewhere in North America with the Celicas being delimited at the dealership so they could hit 9000rpm.

Where can you get TRD parts in Perth ? (Ok I know I might get a few people laughing at this ;P)

Would also like to improve the handling a bit but I actually do like the ride height because I do not hit any of the concrete kerbs (Front spoiler JUST misses it) so I was thinking LSD + Sway Bars ? But how much does a LSD cost and I know there a different typesof LSD but I have no clue the differences.

I am also wondering what the standard ECU is like for fuel/air mix, does the engine run rich or is it tuned quite well for fuel economy ? Also what size exhaust is standard in the Sportivo ? Is there any point in upgrading the zorst ?

And finally LSD + Sway bars vs Coil overs what would be a better combo ?

Thanks

Regards

Russell

hey congrats on your new car and welcome to the forum i have only had my stivo for a few weeks myself alot of the answers to your questions can be found just by using search function many of these topics have been covered in extensive detail. Heres a few quick answers:

1. Yes you can get either quife lsd or trd (trdusa.com) but it would set you back a little over a grand (not ot mention install $$$) silvabullit or mr revhead mite be able to do a good price for you, dont quote me but i think it causes warrenty issues.

2. Coilovers are a good investment if your really serious on handling but if you get koni+kings with rear sway bar front strut etc. it would do the job nicely (have a group buy on whitleline gear struts, sway bars right now) that combined with the lsd would be verry nice.

3. Im in melbourne so i wouldnt have a clue where to get trd parts directly some dealers do stock them but over 90% of the time its imported anyway. E-bay is your friend and check the pinned posts for part locations, modifications etc.

Ok hope that all helps

Cheers

The fuel cut out on the 2zz's (celicas and stivos) is 8200 i think (correct me if im wrong)

No-one here has an lsd as far as i know.. You'd be looking at $2K for an lsd

Best bet for handling if you don't want to lower your car is a rear swaybar. (apparently)

I had my car lowered recently on King Springs superlows and its like driving a different car..

So much more fun :P

The mod that gets the most thumbs up around here is a CAI.. The induction noise is just magic.. plus the added bonus of a 5-6 KW's atw

now for some eye and ear candy

This is the sound of a stock Stivo with an Injen CAI ($360)

Thanks for the advice guys !!

That CAI sounds awesome !! Just need to find a good toyota specialist in Perth now, I actually do not know of any over here !! :/

Not sure if I should stick with TRD parts or go go 3rd party (Thinking Cusco)

Hi all,

Have had my 'rolla for one week now and loving it but have a few questions. (I tried asking these at the dealer but they did not seem too know much !)

Mate im surprised they even let u ask a question .... usually these guys dont wanna talk to you after u've signed the dotted line (sorry u'll notice me n mr toyota dont get along)

9000rpm red line on the Sportivo is that only possible if you get a engine rebuild ? I thought they did hit 9000rpm but it seems to be only 8k :/ I remember hearing somewhere in North America with the Celicas being delimited at the dealership so they could hit 9000rpm.

Red line on the sportivo is 8250 give or take a few rpm's. Not sure about the celica's hitting 9000rpm's out of the dealership but ill tell u wat on a stock engine on stock internals i dont think the car would be making much power that high in the rev range also considering their fuel is crap house and 2 you are getting really close to stretching the limits of the valves before ur gona experience valve float. If you wanted to run it up this high ur gonna need an after market ECU (piggyback aint gonna help u). Ur also probably gonna need to get the valves n valve springs done as well as possibly another injector as u need to feed this baby somehow if u wanna keep the power going...also cams would help u out dramatically. In japan also raising the compression to 13:1 also is and added bonus but we dont have the petrol in AUS to sustain that..... :( :( :(

Where can you get TRD parts in Perth ? (Ok I know I might get a few people laughing at this ;P)

As the guys have mentioned sourcing TRD bits in AUS is not the easiest thing and when it is easy it aint the cheapest thing. Try bruce over in NZ at www.trdsales.com let him know ur from the aus corolla forum he should look after you and also check out the parts list stick in the forum as i think there might be other trd shops listed not sure.

LSD is gona vary from $1200 upto $2000 (this is just for the unit). Their are clutch type n gear types. clutch types r cheaper but will require maintenance just like a clutch where as gear types are more expensive but wont require the high level of maintenance like ur gear box. On top of this there are 1 way, 1.5way and 2way LSD's. 1 way is the unit is active purely for acceleration. 1.5 is fully on for acceleration but half on for deceleration (recommended for amatures and street driving) ...2way is fully on both on acceleration and decel... apparantly is also noisey and is better suited for track work.

I am also wondering what the standard ECU is like for fuel/air mix, does the engine run rich or is it tuned quite well for fuel economy ? Also what size exhaust is standard in the Sportivo ? Is there any point in upgrading the zorst ?

The stock ECU is ok but once u put any performance mods on the car its all over and its not running the best. Then again as these are mass produced we have seen some real shockers where it ran mega rich and others ran really lean..... Cant remember how big the stocker exhaust was but many members have seen good gains from upgrading the exhaust. Mate u might be in luck for the exhaust .... their is a CES for sale .... check the buy n sell section .... I have one of these on the car n give it the thumbs up ..... and so do many others

And finally LSD + Sway bars vs Coil overs what would be a better combo ?

All the things you mention are going to be doing 3 different things so to trade one off against the other is probably not comparing apples with apples if you know what i mean .... I would probably start with sway bars/strut braces n then c how the car handles ... if ur still not happy go the coil overs then c how the car handles if still not happy get stickier tyres n c how the car handles and if still not happy go the lsd and c how it is then .... there is no point in buying all the items and chucking them on cuz u might find u prefer the drive without the LSD for example.....

cheers

Bill

Wow thanks for all the replies !!

Well I have one more question ;) To do with the engine (once again) is it possible to get the lift to kick in at 5000rpm or is that an after market computer job ?

Thanks for the great advice on suspension/LSD setup have helped me heaps (And saved me alot of money!)

Will check out that exhaust and try to find a CAI as well, wasn't going to go for more power but I guess it does not hurt ;) I am hoping that the exhaust will also make the car sound even better !

As for the toyota dealership I know for sure I will not be servcing my car there, can't wait till I get the satisfaction questionaire to fill out, I have a nice report to send to Toyota Aus.

Thanks

to answer your question. yes it is possible [anything is] but it pointless doing this because there isnt enough air mass/flow going into the engine at that rev range, it would just bog down. toyota have spent millions of dollars designing this motor, so im sure this is the most powerful and economical range to keep the high cam lobes in, anything less would be a waste

it is possible to get lift to kick in earlier, but from what i understand the greater amount of lift equals much less torque, so really u really wouldnt want any less torque than what the stivo currently puts out. BTW dad's rally car stivo revs to 9 grand with the motec computer and really good fuel.

Hi Northy

Is it easy to change lift to kick in at 5700?

I've read many of your posts Northy and you have done so much to your car, I get confussed at times trying to understand what it all does ;) (still new to the game so trying to learn all this stuff)

Many thanks for the answers guys :-)

:D :D :D

At 5000 rpm the lower cam has not been utilised to 100% of its potential and the higher cam would not have wound up enough for it to be useful leaving u with a very very very dull spot if you kicked in lift (i.e. ur high cam) at 5000 rpm's.

Like northy ive had my lift point moved to some where round the 5700rpm mark and yes its going to take a after market computer job to do this.

After having the car on the dyno for almost 60 runs and moving this point up and down the rev range after getting both cams tuned to full potential this was the best point to have the change over into lift .....
