tyres scrubbing

G'day fellas,

I've just bought a 2013 SR Hilux. I'm going to be putting a 2" lift under it. What I want to know is, ill a set of 31x10.5x15 fit under it without scrubbing. ill also be putting new rims on it at the same time, so what offset would you recommend to fit comfortably??

AFAIK offset is fixed by the construction of the hubs and brakes of the car. I doubt you can safely choose a non-standard offset for your vehicle, but I have been wrong before. You prob need to talk with tyre and wheel shops. I presume you're going off-road, so make sure the rims are strong enough. Steel ones can be bent back into shape, but alloy ones break if hit hard. Make sure they're a common type, as you may need more than 5.

To get an idea of what you're up for, you could try these options to get started.

1. Get your vehicles OEM wheel track / offset detail from the Road Vehicle Descriptor Online system @ https://myrta.com/rvd/index.jsp
2. Use this calculator https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/  to compare your original fit spec with what you're considering and you'll get some idea of how the tyre will grown inside your wheel arch. Useful too, in terms of understanding speedo error as well.

I've used the steps above recently to get my vehicle's tyre/rim fit back to spec in terms of wheel track. I had 31x10.50R15 fitted that I'd changed to years ago without doing enough research and too much faith in the tyre shop. The tyres fit fine and gave me no issues off road in terms of clearance. However, when I measure the wheel track it was outside legal spec.

My tyres were due for replacement recently, so I used that opportunity to get back within the fold. Fortunately, where I am, I've got access to a specialist 4WD / tyre fitting outfit nearby who are well versed in the issues associated with lifting vehicles. They sorted me out with a tyre rim spec and things are looking good. I'm glad I consulted the right people. Online calculators are fine but to close things out, working with the right expertise is what I would strongly recommend.

I've got a big name tyre outfit 5 minutes up the road from me but they just couldn't deliver when it came to dealing with something a little bit out of the ordinary.
