Hi, first post here!
My partner was driving our 93' Camry Vienta through a roundabout today when it suddenly lost all gears, (behaved as in neutral). When left to sit for about 10 seconds it will fix itself up. Pop in drive: works, reverse: works, drive: works, reverse: stops working... all gears lost. Turn off, wait ten seconds. start it; same thing: works, works, works, stops working after about 10 seconds. Does it again and again.
Normally when its on its way out it will work when cold and then stops when it gets warm or hot, but this seems to be different.

Hopefully someone knows this problem and has a fix. Otherwise I'm thinking about doing a filter and fluid change tomorrow, to see if it improves things as a first step in fixing it, final step...... being the replacing the transmission.

Thanks!

It sounds like the transmission may be low on fluid or being starved of fluid

Yes- thanks Trent. After servicing the transmission it came good. Tough units. Lots of gunk in the old oil and filter!

When I last changed the auto transmission fluid on my 1998 Camry and on my 1996 Nissan Pulsar, I used the flush method as described in the attachment.

There are also YouTube videos showing this flush treatment. Handy to know for future reference.

Alternatively, you can do a regular change of the ATF in the oil pan which is what I have done for my Aurion.

Also after reading this article, I will be using synthetic ATF instead of DEXTRON.
