Hey everyone,

I'm interested in purchasing a 89 Toyota Celsior. What are some of the key mechanical things to look out for?

I've heard older Toyota's generally have electrical issues.

You cannot go wrong with a celsior. Very reliable.

Only issue i can remember is maybe the dash lights and the odometer being faulty. I think. I had to delve into my brain archives :)

I'm taking a look at it tomorrow afternoon. It has about 165000kms on the clock and needs a little paint touch up. I'm hoping I can talk him down to $3k.

What's the starting price?

He wanted $5k, says he'll take $3500.

$3k might be a bit of an ask, but it can't hurt to try.

It would be $200 - $250 to get it checked out by Redbook. I don't believe the car has any major issues. Maybe I can meet him in the middle at $3250.

Should I be concerned about the age of the car?

And like the Soarer of a similar vintage the air-con LCD screen loves to bleed.

Thats what i meant.. faulty LCD.

I do believe he has put in a new LCD screen. I'll be checking out the car this afternoon.

Car looks pretty good. Needs a bit of TLC, the paint is faded and the front seats need to be reupholstered. It's been bagged and has a new LCD screen that runs on Android. I'm pretty tempted to buy it.

If it's remotely decent condition, they are a lot of car for that price.

A turbo in it would be nice :)

What's stopping you? Buy it and throw one on. 🙄

Just looking at how much the TLC is going to cost overall. Looks worth it, so I'm probably going to buy it.

I'm going to get a mechanic to look at it and if it's a-okay, I'm going to have to buy it.

I have seen 2 other Celsiors/Crowns and a Lexus LS400 for sale.

The mechanic believes there was something wrong with the car and the seller just wanted someone to buy it blindly, and not have it checked out at all. Not only did I have to chase him up, but the mechanic tried to get a hold of him several times. Then he just stopped replying.

If I'm lucky, maybe something nice will pop up sooner or later.
