MT Conversion

Recommended Posts

Dear All,

Just signed in a few days ago, so hi to everyone.

1. Does anyone have a rough cost on converting an auto to a manual? Doesn't need to be exact just an approx figure is ok. I know that prolly selling the Rolla (2003 Conquest) and buying another one might be the better option (maybe a yaris?), but if the cost of the conversion isn't too much then i might give it a go.

Reason for that is i believe the auto trans is very inefficient, also i read somewhere that your losing about 10KW compared to the manual.

Thanks.

Since second hand manual gearboxes are hard to come by on cars these days it prob would be easier to buy another car that is manual. But if your attached to your car the 2ZZ 6 speed fits onto the 1ZZ, but you will still need a new ECU, gear linkages and various other stuff. The reason I mention the 6 speed gearbox is there are a couple of people selling theirs in the buy/sell section.

the gearbox and associated parts would be easy to source, there's tons of ZZE rollas written off every week, hence the abundance of 1ZZ motors available at wreckers.

If the ECU is capable of running without the auto solenoids connected (which many other DENSO ECU'd toyotas can do), then you would just have to install the MT clutch and brake pedalbox, clutch master with associated brake master resivour, clutch line, gearbox with MT flywheel and clutch and MT engine mount.

Then install the shifter and shift cables (cables are pain in the **** to install). You might have to repin the connector for the reverse light switch on the box into an MT connector housing if the plug is different.

Grab the driveshafts from the wreck aswell as I can't comment if the auto and manual shafts are interchangable.

I would expect you could get all the required parts for about $1K-2K from a wrecker depending on how many cartons you also pay with.

If you have to go to the manual ECU, then it's a much more expensive process due to the engine immobiliser and transponder key. You can send the key and ECU to some specialist companies to be reprogrammed to match each other, or you could install a spyder MT powerfc. If you get the ECU programmed to your key, there is also some repinning of the ECU plugs on the engine loom required.

MAN!!

Thanks for all the input guys, now i'm kinda put off as to the amount of things that is required to convert it.

But i'm not to the point where i'm giving up, not yet anyway. :(

I'll do a bit more researching into it to see how it goes. If it indeed is that much of a hassle i'll off load it to my wife and prolly get a 1.5L yaris ( ). But the 1zzfe has much more better potential then the 1nzfe...ARGH!!

Thanks all anyway
