Blowin white smoke when engine cold

Recommended Posts

Hey ive got a corolla ascent 1zz-fe.. it is fairly new only done 27000kms...

Ive noticed on a cold engine start it blows quite a bit of white smoke which has a burning smell. Im thinking it could possibly be a head gasket but the car seems to be too new to have such a problem..

It goes away once the car is warmed up..

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

All cars blow white smoke on a cold morning when the engine is cold, its nothing to be concerned about. When you car blows black smoke is when you should get worried. Has you car been serviced on its schedule?

That always happens on start up. I don't have a burning smell, but a rich fuel smell. Methinks that is the cat making that smell on startup when it's stationary. Start it up, and just drive it straight away shifting at 3,000rpm until the thermostat opens (you'll know that once the temp gauge moves to about 1/4). Then you can open it up more.

As for the white smoke? Cars always have that telltale white smoke when they've only just been started up. Once they warm up it goes away.

proper white/grey smoke is headgasket, with coolant/oil being burnt off in the combustion process, black smoke is from fuel usually, eg rich.

The mist you get from the exhaust on cold days on first start is normal. If you're concerned about a BHG, remove your oil cap and check for a milky buildup on the bottom of the cap.

This has nothing to do with the oil you run, and the toyota oil is actually pretty good.

With a BHG, your oil looks like this when you drain it: http://www.rollamods.com/gallery/pos/pos059.jpg

Theres a distinc difference between smoke and the steam you get in the mornings. If it's actually smoking check your oil for a milky look and check your water for oily sludge. Could be a headgasket, though i seriously doubt at 20,000km car could do a head gasket
