  1. My rolla gets castrol magnatec 10-30 from memory. I like to look after my things, none of this cheap **** $15 bottle of oil crap. My weekender uses Royal Purple though i've heard/experienced some engines don't like it. My old weekender used to burn royal purple (vq35de) however didn't burn castrol edge sport (also quite liked this oil). Mobil 1 gold bottle used to be goodstuff too but was recently-ish changed to not a true full synthetic. Imho castrol magnatec will be find for most rolla's barring stivos that may see constant high rpm. Never tried motul..would like to one time. All of the above was just from feel and looking at the oil during oil change, i never had oil analysis done.
  2. Greg is a champ. I haven't used them myself but hear good things about the pads. Depends what type of driving you do.. What are your needs? If it's just basic a to b driving, a set of ferodo or bendix will do. I don't think qfm do basic pads but rather more sports oriented stuff.
  3. Yeah these type of threads always turn into good entertaintment :D Plenty on SAU haha. Fwiw, i consider a stivo to be quite fast. Anything that can do under 7s to 100 with no or minimal mods is plenty enough for street driving (taking into account the acceleration is matched to a good setup sporty car, not some stupid supercharged v8 4wd jeep or something). Under 7's is good tractable power.
  4. Lol i don't own a stage 3 apr tuned golf gti if you wanna talk apples and apples :P. Heck i don't even own a golf gti lol..way too many around. I bought a mazda 3 mps instead back then but in hindsight should've waited for golf gti stock (was a massive backorder in 06 or so). The mps was a fairly hopeless point and shoot weapon only. For the above audi 1.8t rubbish, i would much rather an equivalent jap car anyday.
  5. A dsg boxed gti will munch your stivo unless you're a regular drag warrior. Doesn't take much to make the gti ALOT faster either.. So much fail in this thread now lol.
  6. Check this out for your mate http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi09_rev4.pdf It has the wheel upgrade guidelines in there and mentions that while it is recommended to follow the tyre placard sizing, you DON'T have to. Read the sizing carefully and determine if the stivo wheels are ok (my guess is they would be, being a toyota item that is fitted on another corolla). Then just get an engineer/rta to pass the item and that's it. And print the document and keep in the glovebox for future ammo if they try the same thing again.
  7. Yes people have been done for low washer fluid before (when they get desperate to pin something on you). It has to do with safety i'll imagine by having a really dirty windscreen and unable to clean it posing a visibility/safety problem. From memory you can go two inches larger in diameter..i dunno pretty hazy on it. Just d/l the rta documents and keep them in the glove box for if you get pulled over and quizzed about it. If your wheel upgrade is within rta acceptable sizes, i'm quite sure it's an owner certifiable mod (i.e. you don't need to have an engineer cert. done for it).
  8. LOL speakers will explode haha. Plenty of good value for money speakers out there too! Last value for money set i used was Jaycar's kevlar range. Alot of jaycar's equipment get good reviews and if you count the price, they sometimes come out best. Wouldn't hurt to run a small amp though.
  9. Most niche "sports" cars are under-rated by various groups/people. Being a toyota doesn't help either. A rolla levin being import only and older wouldn't be comparing fair to the lancer, especially with the 1.6l engine imho. Personally i like under-rated cars. I had an fto first and that was super under-rated..all my mates thought it was a girl car till i whooped their ****s in touge runs. Moved on to a mazda 3 mps and i removed the mps badges and kept the exterior stock..probably fooling most into thinking it was a normal mazda 3 :D then got a v35 skyline coupe when they were still rare (frigging everywhere now) and that was very rare and unknown when i had it. It's just less hassle with cops (only ever been pulled over once for the car i was driving and that was in bankstown lol), not every person wants a drag at the lights and having to worry less parking in carparks and whatnot. Having something unique-ish gives an exclusivity feeling too haha.. I've got a very common sports/hoons car now and it's certainly harder to drive it on the streets. Enjoy the under-ratedness! Edit - oh sorry, realised you might've meant the rolla levin with 1zz-fe, not the 20v 4age.
  10. 30% is becoming auto transmission power loss.. It all comes down to the dyno though.. one dyno may show you have 100fwkw and another may show 90fwkw. Alot of variables when doing power runs too inc. type of dyno. The zze series rolla's are modern cars too and modern transmissions tend to save 5% or more compared to older type gearboxes in older cars from my personal observations. imho
  11. Lol xoom... there will always be something faster out there in damn obscure forms (your rolla counts lol, who'd expect a 12sec zze series rolla). E.g. my best mate had his **** handed to him and his near 200awkw wrx by a civic running a special k setup with prolly k motor. Turbo'd 2zz...lol, got traction ? :P I had enough issues with 180kw with my old mps3 on S compound tires =/ (you came to one of the mps meets coupla years back and i was there actually).
  12. Plastic fantastic is it.. never been in one myself but yeah agree on alot of modern cars having plastic overload. Was looking at lancers as a daily before i bought my rolla but most of them are 3 star crash rating lol (unless you're talking the current lancer), and i see a few of them done up to look like an evo x/ralliart lancer - so ghey imho.
  13. For a modern fwd, expect 15-25% power loss through the drivetrain.. Just beware of older lancers with the fto mivec engine and sss' with an sr20det eeh hah.
  14. Yeah only the gpx and GP. Most potent in manual form.. very roughly 60% of fto's are autos, possibly more. And of the remaining manual bunch, around half are likely gpx/gp. From what i see on roads and on the fto club anyways :)
  15. Oh and to add, generally parts from a same model (eg stivo to ascent) is permitted but check the nature of modification. i.e. if it is something owner certifiable, or if you need to have it engineered to be almost 100% safe (i say almost 100% safe because there's been cases of owners with engineering cert's still getting defected). There's a list of owner certifiable mods/allowances on the rta website and a list of authorised engineering signatories if you are inclined so.
  16. dwee, Depends on the level of stretch - each tire manufacturer will have recommendations to rim size for each of their tires (and these will be different across brands and even same brand but diff. models as it depends on the construction of the tire). The recommendation will be given as min width wheel to max width wheel and also with a recommended width wheel. Attitude test helps yep.. pretty damn unlucky to get picked up for that though but there are stories of brand new commodores being defected for a loose hand-brake or modified cars that the cops can't get anything on so they do the windscreen washer fluid trick/defect. Guys, it's really bad out there at the moment with defects and what not, be careful. Though not officially, i reckon it's the state trying to raise more revenue. My old man's rolla got defected too..who would think a cop would bother to pull over an ae101r hatchback.
  17. Stivo if both drivers are same skill level, quite easily too.. this will be at the drags mhmm. Those aus spec mivec engines aren't designed to be quick but torquey/easy as a daily around town car. The mivec 2L in the fto is good though (147kw, 200nm torque and 8200rpm limiter all from an engine being manufactured and sold in 94).
  18. Thread revival lol. Thanks guys! Still enjoying driving it around :) The car goes pretty good, the torque is definitely handy and the gear ratio's make it very zippy around town. Had a nice set of extras that made me buy it lol.. I don't think i'll be making any performance mods to it, though i'd love to but like said i'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment and i'm just finishing up on the weekender plus don't wanna lose the low down torque as that's what makes it so nice to drive. I'll try and make it out to one of the meets sometime :)
  19. If you're really worried about being low on power and think you should have more..perhaps it's best you perform a compression test (wet and dry) and a leakdown test to determine the health of the internals. Low compression from dodgy rings will rob you of power and it could be the case but i hope it isn't. Honestly though, 110ish fwkw from a 1.8L, you should be happy. It's getting up there in terms of the hp/displacement ratio for n/a and this is on a newish car (post 2000) where emissions control reduced power for alot of engines (harder for manufacturers to make good power from a given displacement whilst meeting emissions standards etc). Can also come down to which dyno you were at, your tire pressures, weather on the day.. so many variables.
  20. Awhile ago i bought some eyelids for my old mazda 3 mps. Pretty crappy quality. Would never buy there again so +1 to the comments above.
  21. He asked *shrugs*. I never dissed him, just gave my honest opinion. Whatever.
  22. Can appreciate your enthusiasm but cannot appreciate the product sorry. A v6 commo will be a decently fast car for a p plater though..must make your 85 rolla seem like a slowboat lol. Not gonna handle for shiz though. And sorry to say, a sportivo rolla will wipe the floor with a v6 commo. I don't own one, just have driven my mate's one before. It'll just have to work hard with the power delivery they have. You mention big torque from your v6 and you have a point however it's not just torque.. power comes into play at the higher rpm's. How large of a powerband the engine has, it's rev-ability, the car's weight and also the final drive and gearbox ratio's. My first car managed to pull away from a vn 5litre and that was a 2L engine only. (was a mitsu fto 116fwkw 1150kg).
  23. Thanks all :) Got a set of 4afe genie headers ceramic coated laying around looking for an engine to mate to. Got various pods laying around too hrmm.. Justin105, Sounds like you got a top deal on your rolla too, congrats! Shame about the ae112r though. Prozak, A varex muffler and electronic adjustment would take care of that - Wish i wasn't so poor right now bah!
