  1. ^ Well I remember seeing some ages back for like $200... not sure if they were 'approved' or not and Im not sure if youd waste your time changing the back lines which both are more expensive to do labour wise and have less of a brake load. As for brake pads lol $250 a pair, I dont know where you get yours from but decent pads dont cost that much. Eitherway, I still say this other option is cheaper... but it doesnt matter anyway, you wont really feel the stopping power of slotted rotors unless you have to brake hard at 100km/h which is extremely rare... so it is pointless pay more then you would for standard blanks. The other options are cheaper, provide more of a gain at normal driving speeds, give gains you can actually notice in everyday driving etc... and wont place added wear on other things like pads, in turn costing you more. All about cost vs benefit imo.
  2. ^ Yes I agree... I was gonna say if your taking it to the track then yes by all means get slotted. But for your avg car as Ive been saying, just go for cheaper solutions like SS Lines and good brake pads etc which you will feel the difference at in everyday driving.
  3. ^ Yes and I can find a number of articles that suggest it does minimal. That article lost me when they suggested slotted rotors increase pad life, Im sorry but you cant say their is a shaving effect which helps stopping and then suggest it decreases wear. Also, no mention of how with slotted rotors there is less surface area between rotor and pad, which is not a good thing. And there tests are at 100km/h.... In all my years and anyone else I kno of driving, never had to brake extremely hard on a highway yet, at lower speeds, the difference is negligble. Do what you want... but the best bang for your buck is some SS brake lines and decent pads. Rotors will cost you more short term and long term, its one of those cost > benefit things.
  4. Id get the SX6... its abit more money yes but it looks WAY better then the base model at the front and its obviously got stiffer suspension etc so you can throw it about with confidence... along with all the other stuff.
  5. Lol thats news to me... the number 1 factor in brake inefficiency is HEAT. Thats why bigger brakes are the only real way of getting better brake performance (Granted you said this at the end of your post). The 'glazed' theory is BS and Im sure its come from some nifty marketing from whoever sells these slotted rotors, at best your talking about 1mm off braking distance lol for $400! Not to mention get ready to change your brake pads are alot shorter intervals. Its not related to the heat, its about when you brake, with stock lines they SWELL under the pressure, reducing pedal feel and no doubt brake efficiency. With stainless steel lines, their is no swell, so the fluid is forced down the channel more directly, if you get what I mean. Personally looking at low budget brake improvement, this along with some good quality brake pads is all I would do.
  6. What do you want out of this.... better braking ability or better looks? Because slotted rotors really dont help braking performance at all, in fact they increase wear on brake pads alot. If your looking to improve your braking the cheapest ways are : * Better tyres (they are what get the brake force the ground, idealy you want fatter tyres although getting better tyres will help) * Stainless steal brake lines (Stock lines usually aernt SS and swell under hard braking, reducing pedal feel)
  7. Lol yeah.... but they also have 50 page liftouts and dedicate the magazine to Holden. There is no denying that wheels isnt biased... for whatever reasons. I dont buy into the Aurion handling extremely poorly, and even if it somehow does, there would be reasons like its thinner tyres etc... regardless from the drive review: "The Commodore feels more secure in corners than the Aurion but the Toyota is by no means an embarrassment in this regard. In the typical Toyota way, the Aurion's electronic stability control cuts in early, well before the car is about to get out of shape. The difference in grip may be due to the fact that the Aurion has the skinniest tyres among this trio. The Aurion SX6 is equipped with Michelin Energy Saver tyres, said to last longer and create less friction. Friction is what gives you grip but this trade-off may mean that you could get significantly longer wear out of the Aurion's tyres than you would with those on the sporty Falcon and Commodores. The Falcon XR6 runs on 235/45 tyres, the Commodore SV6 245/45 and Aurion SX6 on 215/60." While they say about the Falcon: "The Falcon lacks equipment, has over-sensitive steering and an uneasy ride on bumpy bends" You will find that most cars these days are designed to understeer rather then oversteer... it is alot safer.
  8. ^ The car was free, its only on lease essentially ;). Im not expert, but looking at redbook there is only the supercharged version (If you were saying it isnt that is... I have no idea what the models are). And they mention in the article how the car is powerful enough to beat V8s, I somehow dont think a naturally asperated 1.8L could do that, no matter how well tuned / technologically advanced the engine may be.
  9. Please tell me you intend to do some performance mods... not just rice it out!?!? If you are going down that path as well, get an exhaust job done with a custom Y-pipe, piggyback ecu and port and polish the intake. That will give you the most bang for your buck and a decent amount of power as well!
  10. ^ Yeah they want respect etc... drop the attitude that some cops have towards certain car enthusiasts, a nice car wont do much when your getting fined for something petty because someone is on a power trip. And I think its ridiculous as well the cops accepting the Lotus, they are essentially advertising for that company... its kinda like a bribe although instead of handing over cash they hand over a $100,000 car for free
  11. ^ Hmmm maybe. Wouldnt be the case now though, with stability control etc they can fly around corners in the SS and XR8 and the SS at least does the 100 in 5.5secs, so quicker then a WRX!
  12. ^ Yeah they are highly under-rated.... and mind you they severly tuned it down as well. A lightly modified Gen3 V6 actually has a record at wakefield park, its only 1sec behind a VT SS which has the advantage of RWD and a 5.7L V8 - http://www.wakefieldpark.com.au/index.cfm?...111040823edoras (Look at the GT Production cars records) The same era's Falcons had only 5kw more with 1L's more dissplacement (also weighed 100kg more) and the Commodore had 10kw less with nearly 1L's more dissplacement.... prity ordinary (Equivalent sized engines to the Camry in the Maxima and Sonata had even less, with the highest being only 120kw). And Commodores had pushrod until the turn of the century I believe while Camrys had DOHC back in the 80's... Holden are always abit behind, look at the new Omega as well, 4speed trans vs the Aurions 6speed. I draw alot of connections between the Aurion and the Gen3 V6 Camry for their era's, apart from looks, they are similar...both for their time are the most powerful, both had technolgocically advanced engines (Aurion has dual vvti, the camry had ACIS -> variable intake among all other things), both were alot more refined then competition, both are underrated etc
  13. ^ I dunno... cops in the past have caught motorbikes, and they are a hell of alot faster (not so around corners, but their acceleration makes up for that 10 fold). All they need to do is stay on the vehicle until a helicopter comes around and then you have no chance of escape.
  14. $230 per tyre woah!!! Yeah Im not a fan of Falkens, in the dry they were good but in the wet very poor. Im currently on continetnals, worse then the Falkens in the dry by only abit, but very good in the wet... good compromise. Were only $150 (Albeit way smaller tyres..... 215/R16)
  15. Well I dont have a Tarago, but I kno with the Camrys its around $1500 to fix the headgasket and around $3000 to replace the engine. In saying this, if the Tarago has an inline engine as opposed to V like my Camry... then it would be alot cheaper to do the headgasket job as its literally half the work. But you also have to weigh up other things, how many kms has the car got on it? Does it have blue smoke out of exhuast at all? etc. If the engine is young and in good nick, then just do the headgasket (And maybe get some of the parts in the head checked as it will be off...better fixing it now while its all off). If its old... then either replace the engine or rebuild, might cost more in short run, but long term its gonna cost you less. Also you need to find the cause of why the headgasket went, or else it may very well happen again. Was it due to overheating etc? Just some things to consider.
  16. ^ I think the whole WRX era was just because they wanted to have fun lol. Honeslty WRX's wouldnt be THAT much faster then SS's and XR8's... and with police helicopters it doesnt matter how fast your car is, you have no chance... even motorbikes which are way faster then most cars get caught. Abit annoying the Aurion is being used a cop car... now I will have to slow down on highways for all new falcons, commodores and aurions
  17. Ummm it would cost a fortune to get the Aurions engine into the Camry though.... cos its gonna be a virtually brand new engine you have to buy. Why didnt you just buy the Aurion? Its gonna end up costing the same if not more then it would have to just have bought the Aurion. Anyway, if you have heaps of money, I would just save up for the TRD Aurion... wouldnt have to worry about frying the Camry engine in 6 weeks or other problems that would develop in modding your current engine.
  18. ^ Yeah the TRD Aurions ratio will be interesting. Rough comparison below between stock Aurion, TRD Aurion, XR6 Turbo (realistic competitor), VE SS (realistitc competitor) and HSV GTS (claimed competitor by the powers that be...although IMO out of its league, esp if it goes ahead with a FWD configuration in terms of handling ability): Aurion 7.75kg per kw TRD Aurion - More than likely (250kw) 6.4kg per kw - Pessimistic (230kw) 6.96kg per kw XR6T 7.19kg per kw SS 6.66kg per kw HSV GTS 5.86kg per kw Now the Aurion will have alot less torque, eitherway going off the times of the other cars.... I would guess the Aurion would do the 100 easily under the 6second mark, as the XR6T supposedly does it in 6secs, SS is claimed to do it in 5.4secs and the GTS just under 5. I really hope the current delay is because of a rethink of its configuration, FWD is alright but given that it wont have alot more power then the others, its certainly not going to have a major impact on the market. An AWD V6 on the other hand would be a massive hit IMO, certainly would give some comeptitors execs a few things to be worried about.
  19. Lol well now this is going off topic.... compared to the useful discussion that was occuring before.
  20. Ummmm its not about winning, its a discussion about the VE vs Aurion. Im entitled to give my opinion, and defend the Aurion abit (Early days of this thread were just praising the VE)... there are always two sides to the story.
  21. Im assuming it was directed at me? M8 Im not about badges and bling.... Im about which car is better. The Aurion > The VE. You have one car that has DOHC's and dual VVTi and another which until the turn of the century was still using prehistoric pushrod. You have one car that sources decent parts and another which gets them from Korea n co. You have one car that comes with a state of the art 6 speed trans (same as lexus use) and another with a prehistoric 4 speed trans. You have one car which has had 0 recalls (to my knowledge?) and another car which has had 2 in 6months. You have one which comes with the basic features you need such as A/C and you have another which dooesnt. You have one manufacterer who is widely known as being reliable and another which is know for the exact opposite reasons. You have a manufacter who knows they have a good product and lets consumers decide and you have another who has to use a rigorous marketing campaign with crappy unjustified quotes and a 'making of' series to convince people they have finally built a car worth something. etc It wouldnt take Einstein to work out which car is which in the above and which is the better car ;)
  22. The NRMA reviews are prity decent, and the figures you mentioned are more like what V6's get... Im still reserved on that one. I said in another reply: "Explain how? Taxi companies have been using Holdens and Fords for as long as I can remember.... are you telling me they have all been reliable models? Last time I checked, they aernt exactly known for reliability, Toyotas are though. The point? You can hardly say because Taxi's use them they are reliable! I would say that other factors such as larger occupant space, larger dissplacement engines (more pulling power under load) and image (Australian cars) have a larger impact then the reliablity of Fords and Holdens, or lack there of it" And lol its well known the reliability of Toyotas, thats the first time Ive heard Fords are reliable!!! Im sure Cabbies get decent mileage out of the cars, they aernt subjected to short trips or constant turning off and restarting, where the most damage in engines occur etc and lol from my limited experience with them at night they dont have to stop and start in traffic, so those particular vehicles get a good life!!
  23. ^ Yeah I agree although I like the Aurion, the Camry looks better, esp the front with its more aggressive looking headlights etc. Just a pity its gutless under the bonnet.
  24. Im sorry but I still dont believe you, its not that it sounds impossible, it is because it is impossible (Talking about your claims of beating newer Commodores and Falcons here.... VL's are a POS). I am aware of the weight difference, thats why I mentioned before off the line you may get them... but once the power gets down, no matter how skillful a driver you are (not that this is even an issue with an auto) you are not going to beat cars with alot more power and torque then yours. Here is the 'technical side', power to weigh ratios (not considering the massive amounts of torque they have over the SV21 Camry): Your Camry 12.84kg per 1kw VL Commodore 11kg per 1kw ^ Beatable with your car - although I will say, 2kg difference doesnt seem like much, but it is alot 2000 Falcon 9.59kg per 1kw ^ Absolutely no chance - they also have literally over double the torque of your Camry
  25. Yes but this isnt the 'Best Australian built car of the year award'... while the Commodore had these, every other manufacturer had them for years. And we talk about their advancements in safety, what about their engines? The VR and even more recent Commodores which won were still using crappy pushrod, and putting less power down the cars with alot less dissplacement. What about quality? Its a well known fact Commodore dont exactly excel in this area. I could go on... but I dont see how them being the leader in Australian built cars has anything to do with the the car of the year awards (And the Aurion is Australian built not to mention... and has more little 'gadgets' then the Commodores and a far more technologically advanced engine etc, so I should really say the previous leader in Australian built cars). Lol you put a pic up of a $70k+ car and compare it against a $40k car... and worse yet, you choose the crappiest pic eva of the Sportivo. You wanna compare looks, you get two comparable models m8, not completely different ones. As for your argument that no pics are around, then you obviously didnt try hard enough, I found some in 2mins, now here is a PROPER comparison between manufacterers: Sportivo: SV6 FYI the VE in base form looks like a POS. Without a spoiler, twin mufflers and sports suspension, it looks totally out of proportion. Yes all cars dont look great in this form, but the Aurion looks acceptable at least, the VE looks embaressing. Going up in the range, comparing the best Aurion (Sportivo) v equivalent VE (SV6) its each unto their own, personally I prefer the Aurion (And those pics above flatter the SS tbh while the Aurions dont - crappy lighting). As for your last sentence, at the very least you could have compared the Sportivo against an SS, but you didnt, your just trying to discredit the Aurion. And no comparing the GTS with the sports concept is not stupid, its far better then your attempt at a comparison, and its widely known it will prity much be what the TRD Aurion is gonna look like (which is coming out, it is not a rumour any longer), with only slight differences so its practical on your avg road. Each unto their own... although I dont know what your talking about the TRD version being tweaked down. Its already been stated that it will have at least 230kw.... doesnt sound like much compared to say the GTS at 307kw.... but it weighs a good 300kg less, so it will be fast. And yes it wont have 20inch rims like the ones shown, but it will look similar to that car, which is very nice.... which you would expect for $50k+.
