I hope Toyota fixed the "over charging/ over working" issues with the battery. Besides that would love to get one...

Well its definitely good news for Toyota Australia.

Toyota hybrid gets $35m aid

Toyota will receive $35 million from the Federal Government in return for building a new hybrid car in Victoria from 2010.

In Nagoya, Japan, this morning Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and industry minister Kim Carr signed a deal with Toyota executives for the construction of a hybrid Camry at Toyota's Altona plant in Victoria.

Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe said Australia had joined Japan and the United States as part of Toyota's hybrid family.

Mr Watanabe conceded the hybrid Camry would be more expensive than the regular model, but suggested the $35 million subsidy might be used to keep the retail price down.

"It was only recently that we heard about the amount so we are not sure how we will use it," he said.

Mr Rudd said it was an important moment for the Australian car industry.

"We are delighted Toyota has decided to invest in the Australian car industry and build the hybrid Camry at Altona," he said.

Toyota plans to build 10,000 of the cars a year at the plant.

The cars use a third less petrol than a standard Camry, saving the average motorist about $1000 a year.

The $35 million comes from the $500 million green car innovation fund that Mr Rudd promised before the election.

Mr Rudd rejected suggestions it was a manufactuiring subsidy. He said it was to help with start-up costs for a product that had economic and environmental benefits.

I am pleased to report that Toyota has made a decision to begin manufacturing a hybrid version of the Camry sedan at the Altona plant in Melbourne from the beginning of 2010.

This morning Toyota Motor Corporation President, Mr Katsuaki Watanabe, reported the decision to the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd at a meeting in Nagoya, Japan. In a simultaneous announcement, I reported the news to Victorian Premier, Mr John Brumby, at a meeting held at the Altona manufacturing plant.

The decision is the result of a major study that began last year to determine the feasibility of making a hybrid vehicle in Australia.

I am very pleased that hybrid production manufacturing is coming to Australia.

Australia will follow Japan and the United States as a member of the family of Toyota operations that make hybrid Camry.

Today’s announcement means Toyota Australia will be pioneering the production of a hybrid car in this country. It represents an exciting new chapter in the Toyota Australia story. From 2010 we plan to produce 10,000 hybrid Camry at the Altona plant.

There are many factors that led to this moment, but one group of people deserves special recognition.

And that’s the 4500 people who work at Toyota, along with our suppliers and extended Toyota family. The result of your efforts – this decision – provides a great example of how we as a company and as an industry can succeed through innovation.

In addition, we should also acknowledge the support of the Victorian and Federal Governments and their strong desire to see new, environmentally friendly technologies introduced to Australia.

As a result, we will have the unique advantage in our market of producing and selling a four-cylinder hybrid family car.

Hybrid vehicles produce lower and cleaner emissions than standard engine technologies, reduce fuel consumption and reduce the demand for oil.

We should all be looking forward to bringing a hybrid Camry to the Australian market.

I wonder if having that battery pack in the bum helps improve the Camry's cornering balance?

Good News for Australia. Hyundai will shortly bring in a Hybrid LPG Elantra, Holden may possibly introduce a diesel or hybrid or both Commodore. I think Toyota's move should kick start much more green motoring development in Australia.

hahaha.......as soon as every start buying hybrid, they'll have problem disposing the battery pack (unless they're recyclable or eco-friendly) . :help:

plus if you run the Factory Stock Hybrid cars on EV MODE, you won't go for more than 50km (I think, if im not mistaken, currently you only can do 20km on EV MODE, depends on the road, driving style, etc..) till you have a flat battery.

Hybrid is a good start, but they still have a lot of work. well time to buy a GOLF buggy! :whistling:

that's great news. It'll be a good boost for the auto industry in Australia. It's a step in a right direction for more Australia market specific models in the future. Maybe Toyota can pick up some of the engine builders from Holden that are about to lose their jobs.

anyway, at the moment the only benefit i can see from a hybrid is the regenerative braking and also the ability to have a smaller, less peaky engine. Other than that, you're still using petrol.

well apparently they said in our bullitien that there arent going to be a significant amount of extra jobs because the new engine and frame would still be able to run on our line just a matter of new parts to install so on. i also heard that the goverment fleet is going to change over there Holden VE cars to Australian built Toyota Camry Hybrids so that would be a huge boost for us just shows the goverment is looking after us by promoting an Australian built car.
