I can't lock the doors of Camry ateva 2005

Hi

I was trying to find a solution for the problem and found this site. hope someone can give an idea.

I bought camry ateva 2005 from a private seller. Unfortunately it has got an intermittent problem. It happens time to time. When I try to lock the car either with the remote or using the key it chirps twice (indicating a door, boot or the hood is open) and doesn't lock. All the doors are securely closed obviously. I try several time and eventually it locks. I tried to wait a little bit after it makes the problem and it locks after some time. I realized that I have warranty till 2nd of September. I made an appointment today and as you can guess it didn't make the problem there. The guys said we need to see it when it does the problem and said I should go there as soon as it does it. after I came home as you can guess again it made the problem :) But it was 4.30pm so didnt go there. I think it does this after some long driving like 40km. would something be heating up?

Has any body encountered this problem? Or can you give your opinions?

Thanks for replies

Cheers

Yeah i had that problem with my magna, even though all doors were securely shut it wouldn't lock sometimes, but i would always have to open and shut the boot again, try that, could be something wrong with something in the boot

Check the operation of all the door switches, bonnet switch and boot switch...

One of them must be playing up or out of adjustment...

Thank you. the interesting thing is it eventually locks after trying to lock several times without opening any doors or boot or bonnet. Waiting without doing anything seems to help too.

Mate, your problem here is the body module still thinks a door is open. There is no bonnet switch, and the doors normally lock regardless of whether the boot is closed or not. Is the interior light still on after the timer period when you close all doors (i.e. after 30 seconds or so)? If so, then one of your door switches is making contact somewhere, either within the switch itself or via damaged wiring. The switches simply earth, so they're easy to diagnose. Remove the switches and inspect them, see if the associated wires have been pinched and earthing out on the bodywork somewhere. You might need to remove some the trims to access. The switches are secured with a torx screw by memory. Failing all of that, then your body module might be faulty, and could be costly to replace...

Further to this, these switches are normally a problem, but not for your scenario though. We've seen a lot of them where they don't make contact at all, so when you open the door the interior light doesn't come on. This has been a problem in cases where customers complain about their headlights not switching off automatically when they open the door, because the body module does not receive a signal that the door has been opened. This of course is not your problem, it's the opposite way round.

When it happened to my magna the lights would still ight up but the horn would beep everytime, is that whats happening to you?

Yep, that's what's exactly happening. It's not happened since I started the thread. I didnt go somewhere far away that might be the reason.

Thanks for this detailed reply

Interesting thing is manual includes boot and bonnet as well. if they are open it says the doors dont lock. ??!!

I'll check if the interior light dims after 30 seconds. I have warranty till 2nd of September if nothing occurs till the 2nd I'll take it there and try to make them inspect the doors. I'll go to mt buller this weekend so i'll have a lot of time to check that.

Thanks for all the info that was very helpful.

How much does it cost to change the body module anyway? I'd better prepare myself for that :)

A little update here

I went to mt buller yesterday, snow was great btw :) When I returned home it locked the doors. then I went down after 2 hours or so and took something from the car and doors didnt lock. I tried almost half an hour but no luck. opening the trunk and shutting hard helped once or twice. So I am suspecting it could be the trunk.

I have one observation: when there is a literally open door and I try to lock the car it chirps immediately along with signals flashing. but when this problems occurs it first flashes the signal once then chirps. so the problem would be because of something else. or the computer messed up.

I checked after 15 seconds the inside light dims.

I tried pushing the trunk switch up with a screwdriver which shuts the trunk light so it means it's closed. but no help there still does that.

I think whatever it happens or not I'll take it to the service before my warranty expires.

Cheers
