Ae101 twin piston calipers

Hey guys,

An opportunity has come up to buy a pair of ae101 twin piston calipers.

There were 2 or 3 posts that mentioned that they would work but no follow-ups were posted. Initially I was looking at getting ST202 twin piston calipers but Suprathai sorted it out and said that they do not work on our corolla. I have pmed several members on this forum but still waiting for their replies. I thought I might post it up as it would be helpful for anyone who would attempt this in the future.

So has anyone here tried ae101 superstrut calipers on their sportivos or even know if they will bolt on?

In short you will be going to need to use 255mm disc brakes from the regular zze122 corollas. Which IMO is not worth doing, as while although you are going to obtain more even pressure and larger pad area, you will be going backwards due to going down to a smaller disc (275mm vs 255mm)

I thought that the non-superstrut ae101 uses 255mm disc brakes and only single piston caliper. While the superstrut ae101 uses 275mm diameter and 25mm thick thick disc and 54mm centre hole.

as with what suprathai said, it would be a downgrade so not worth it at all.

what you could do is use the ST202 calipers with some ST202 rotors which have had 3 more holes to drill to 4x100.

That way you will get the 28mm thick rotor you need for them, they already have the 55mm internal diameter to go on the hub and are the same 275mm diameter, would be an easy upgrade.

I have some ST202 calipers sitting here as I looked into doing this on my MR2 but I'm going to stick with a single piston caliper, mostly due to weight.

Yeah suprathai turned down that option. This is what he said "The ST202 calipers won't fit the current disc size of the rotors that you have on your sportivo, as the caliper mounting points/legs are not long enough"

While indeed the superstrut twin piston calipers do use 275mm disc, I believe the mounting points on the hub of the zze12# corollas are shorter compared to the AE series corolla. Therefore it is essentially the same.

With that in mind actually, would mounting sportivo/celica calipers on a ae series corolla allow the use of a much larger disc????? 296mm????

I may have stumbled upon something here....

Cause if mounting ae101 twin piston calipers allows the use of 275mm disc on a ae101, but on a zze123 only 255mm. Then if we think about it logically, wouldn't we be able to use zze123/zzt231 calipers mounted on a ae101 corolla to obtain a potential use of a 295mm disc????

Someone surely must have tried it, with so many people with the older series corollas....

The superstrut hub assemblies are the differentiator. When using superstrut twin-piston calipers on a non-superstrut AE corolla hub (in AE82, AE92, AE101/2 or AE111/2) you need to machine the 275mm diameter superstrut disc down to 259-260mm diameter.

To use the superstrut caliper on the sportivo disc and hub you need to machine up a fancy dogbone adapter to space the caliper radially out from the stock location... Given you only have ~20mm of metal to work with for the two sets of holes on the adapter, it's a good idea to go to a larger disc too so the dogbone adapter can be taller. MAP81 uses a 285mm disc with his ST185 twin-piston calipers and dogbone adapter from memory.

The bigger disc and twin-piston calipers with larger pads makes a MASSIVE difference to brake feel and performance. Can be quite un-nerving when going back to a car with stock brakes after getting used to driving one with the upgraded brakes.

Nah, I'm not checking them out. Just waiting for MR22ZZ to sort it out, as he has access to both ST202 and zze123/zzt231 calipers. I've got a spare set of zzt231 calipers, and I'm hoping that I can stick them onto a starlet with sportivo disc

Lol. All good. I see that theres more than one person benefitting out of this caliper mystery when MR22ZZ sorts this out for us.

There are cheaper places to get them.

Like here

The guy said they don't fit under 15" . I might have to get rid of my wheels first and then look at this option.

Anyone got any idea how much modification needs to be done to get them ST205 brakes onto our cars?

Anyone know where in Sydney I can get a dogbone adapter made up? I'm using the 255mm (1ZZ) disc with the twin piston atm and it works fine but would like to use a bigger disc later.

Kevin there is the man for brake mods. He's done Subaru WRX 4 piston calipers to suit corolla hubs etc in the past. I've had a couple of sets of custom discs made by him too.

*note all measurements done with tape measure (need to buy verniers one day ) so give or take 1mm here or there. i have tried to make them as accurate as possible, but using a tape measure and having a cast on one hand makes it a lil more difficult
