i have heard of several of these breaking, usually the result of a manfacturing defect. I'm guessing your out warranty, maybe buz toyota and see if they have issued some sort of recall.

Phone toyota head office and ask, mention that you think a driveshaft shearing off needs to be investigated as it's a potential safety issue.

Hey what does shearing off mean? I thought the drive shaft breaks suddenly and that's it or is there any sign that indicates it is going to break? I am only asking because I hear some noises occasionally (pass the exhaust) and disappear after a while and I hope it is not this. :-l I have no clue why I am suspecting it can be this either...

Is it a shear failure or a torsion failure? I'd find it hard to believe it is a shear failure. pics?

Fatigue can cause things to break at lower loads than what it was designed for. Defects (stress raisers) can cause this to occur faster.

hey mate,

my mate snapped my shaft a few months back. it was quite a bitch for him to source the part too. it ended up costing quite a few from toyota, so he called around all of melbourne and finally sourced it from a workshop in sydney for an alright price(took it out of another sportivo). hope it'll be easy for you to source it this time round.

the mechanic said it looks to hav screw sheard off. i havent seen it yet but ill get it off him once its done and take some foto's, the car has 30000 k's on it. we'v sourced a shaft through our repco in town, it turned up but on full decompression it is 6 mm mlonger then the oem one. not real sure if its gonna work or not yet. there are 5 different shafts u can get for the one car. it depends on... japanese or south african built, man or auto, motor size, 5 or 6 speed. soo many shafts for one car :( we were meant to be going to brissy wednesday night. so angry at the moment and toyota want $800 for a genuine replacement and i said **** NO lol

I'd be hitting toyota up for a replacement shaft. Shear failure with only 30,000km on a stock motor is not normal. C series shafts have been used for ALL the aus delivered FWD corolla's since 1984 and you only usually see a shear failure when a garbage chinese replacement shaft has been installed to address worn CV's.

well i got a replacement, through my local repco store for $220, toyota wanted 800 trade price. there are 4 or 5 different shafts available. i took the broken shaft into toyota and they said they'v never had any problems with these shafts, they said mine blew out because of dumping the clutch. if this is the case then i take it a cant race the car on the 1/4 without runnin the risk of snapping a shaft. considering these shafts are like an inch in diameter i would have thought they would be nearly unbreakable. i had a wrx and snapped a shaft in that but i gave it the hardest time all the time and their shafts are only 3/4 inch diameter with allot more power and tourque runnin through them.

p.s. im so not happy with toyota

Maybe your individual dealer has never seen a snapped shaft and thats what they were talking about???

As I said, I've seen 3 snapped shafts at my work and heard about others elsewhere...

Nothing much Toyota can do if the car is out of warranty though...

the shaft is not very strong at all. mine also snapped. not the best thing to happen.
