Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask whether or not its possible to tell if a cars been written off before and repaired just by looking at the number plate.

I heard that if the number plate is white with black font and has three letters which starts with a B and has 3 numbers to end it, it means that its been written off before and just repaired for a re-sell. Does anyone know if this is true? Any info on this topic it would be great.

Using the number plate alone won't tell you that information. You will need to get a VCheck on the car which requires at least the VIN number and current registration details.

I don't know what you heard about the plate numbering, but that sounds like a myth to me.

DJKOR is right, it is a complete myth. License plates distribution is random (generally).

+ 2 to the above... You will need the Vin number and reg details

I heard it from a guy that regularly buys and fixes write offs. It didnt sound logical to me at first either, so i just wanted to know if anyone else had heard of it. Thanks for the input though.

Yes because people are too tight to pay 30$ dollars for the Vcheck.

So they go online and do a free rev's check but little do they know if its a ex-repairable write-off from interstate the Revs check wont show its history.

Thats how alot of people get away with it.

That might be true, however if you knew how to repair a write off yourself, you wouldnt go through insurance which is the reason it would make it an official write off, you would repair it privately (which would void it from being listed as a write off). My query is based on distinguishing whether or not its a write off from the number plate.

this is NOT possible, unless you mean looking to see if the number plate is bent or damaged, but this isnt at all accurate.

if you are concerned, get the car checked properly by a mechanic and do a vcheck, simple.

For the number plate to be changed is a result of either the original/previous number plate is old and unclear to be seen or the car was sold at a state where the car doesn't originate where a new plate needs to be used. If the car was repaired after an accident, wouldn't the original plate number be reused even though a new plate is required?
