Hi

I have a 2003 corolla, ithas a bad rattle in the top end of the motor, when it revs up and backs off it is loudest, then it goes away completely, seems to be oil pressure related.

It is like the VVT drum on the inlet cam has a problem or loose timing chain.

It is top end not big end.

Any suggestions .. please ??

Hello and welcome to the forums :D

As stated in the manual, if you ever hear any knocking noise (except when driving uphill continuously)... you should take the car to Toyota immediately. It must be a serious problem relating to your engine.

Hi,

Thanks for that,

It is not pinging i know that.

I am hoping to fix it without taking it to toyota, as it is out of warranty, and they may charge too much.

Thanks.

it could be the bonnet. i had that problem.. slight rattlin noise. the bonnet might not be secure or the rubber isnt doin its job preventing the noise

Oh no... death rattles...

a couple questions... when you rev up and release... as the revs drop... is the rattling comeing from the passenger side or the driver side?

also, do you hear the noise when you have the windows closed or open.

I have similar noises in my car BUT~ i can only hear it when the windows are closed. As i rev up to red line, don't shift then let the revs drop... the rattles comes from the passenger side, where i'm assuming or guess that its the clutch area.

Some car it might be normal, but this only happened to me when my car's clutch was replaced.

also, if you can isolate the rattles' area, or behaviour (i.e. particular rev range) then it would definitely help.

My guess won't be the actual engine itself, as if anything's screwed in the vvti or anything mech terms, then you'll feel a big decrease in power (as the 1zz without VVTi is really really gutless...)

hope this helps, and keep us posted! ;)
