Weird noise 06 lux

Hi All,

Newby with a weird problem. I have had a look through the forum but come up empty so will post issue. 06 dual cab 4x4 turbo diesel started making this wup wup wup noise and self diagnosed front wheel bearings. Anyhow $800 later with new bearings (hubs) the noise is back. Admittedly it went away for a day after the bearings where swapped but returned within a week and is as loud as before.

It is road speed related and not engine speed. Guy who did wheel bearings cannot work out what is wrong. He's told me that it seems to be every 4th wheel turn (?) meaning it's not the tyres. Does not change with different gears so doesn't seem to be gearbox/transfer case (could be wrong there). Starts to come in at around 50/60k and stays up to 110k increasing frequency with road speed. I can sense it through the steering wheel and mate said he felt it through the cab floor drivers side front but I couldn't notice on the passenger side. Suspect cv joints or is there a bearing on the drive shaft? I was told the drive shaft turns 4 times for one revolution of the wheels so this would count that out.

I have run out of ideas and wondered if anyone else might have had a similar experience.

Would love to hear comments or suggestions.

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil how are you mate,From what you are describing sounds like your tyres have a bad case Heel and Toe.When you place a flat hand along the surface of the tyre more so on the inside face of the tread face and pull your hand along it do you feel any high and low spots or do you notice the tread has a saw tooth effect,if you do notice any of these swap your rear wheels to the front or better still can you replace the front wheels and tyres with another couple to totally eliminate yours as being the culprits, also try dropping the front tyre pressure down to say 18- 20 lb and go for a drive and see if it changes the noise and also when and if it emits the noise. If it doesnt make it you know its the tyres and not mechanical.(Its a crude method but one that works at pinpointing if its a tyre issue).Be sensible and keep away from high speeds but as you said it can be heard and felt at 50-60kph.DONT FORGET TO INFLATE THEM AGAIN

Also have you sussed out the universal joints on the front drive shaft. If you have a diff ratio of around 3.7:1 theres your noise your hearing every 4th revolution of the wheels. But if you have free wheeling hubs you should eliminate it by locking them out,Does it do it when you are in 4H ?

Best of luck mate CONROD

hi all,

Has anybody got an answer for this noise (Hilux 2006 dual cab TD IFS) as I have the same noise, normally with a wheel bearing when cornering the noise would increase or decrease depending if LHS or RHS bearing is gone, however this does not happen would like to know if Phil found the noise or if anybody else can help.

My 08 hilux is doing the same thing "wup wup wup noise" starts around 60k and increases in velocity as you go faster. Put new rims and tyres on and had the bearings replaced ..... still doing it. Seems to come from the front right side and you can feel it on the steering wheel. Rotors and brakes are only 6 months old, rear drums replaced recently.

Anyone find a fix for this?

Bad shock/tyres/brakes/buckled rim is my guess, tho' Wup indicates tyres--someone post a recording of sound? Noting age of plantif vehicles-seems common problem? Win't be pre-diff at 1/4 road speed, driveshaft goes the other way-4x road speed. Spin wheel off ground-check for bulges and true running, wobble wheel to check tie rods/steering box. Are tyres 8ply? check wheel ballance & tyre separation. It's not human, the possibilities are finite.

Hi Everyone

I am having the exact same issue with my 2006 hilux. It just started today, i thought it was wheel bearings but checked and they seem fine. Also sounds like it happens every 4th turn of the wheels. Gonna drop the drive shaft out tomorrow morning and see if it is maybe that. Got under it before and pulled on it all, everything seems fine, no play in uni joints. Wondering if any of you guys ended up figuring out out and fixing it? Im thinking maybe a bearing in the diff is on its way out, as the noise was getting worse as i drove home tonight, about a 10klm drive, and the noise only started about 30klms ago. Would greatly appreciate any advice :) will post again when i figure it out.

thanks guys :)

Hi.

Newbie here. Had that noise on going for months now. Done all the wheel bearings and changed the tyres. Still no better. Going to change the diff oil to see if that helps. Other than that i am lost as well. Has anyone figured it out?

Hi, I have the exact same issue.

I have had my mechanic check the car twice and both times he couldn’t find anything wrong. I am stating to think it may also be fluid level in the front axel. I recently had my front axel shimmed (hence the visit to the mechanic) as the front axel was leaking after a recent 4x4 trip to Fraser Island and ever since then this noise is occurring and has everyone stumped. BTW the noise does not appear to be evident when the car is in 4H, only 2H. I also think it may be the tyres as I recently also had a balance and alignment done and car drives perfectly straight and there is no shaking on the wheel, only vibrations when above 90kmh.

When did it start doing it?

Did you have a change of tyres at all?

Hi,

No same tyres and rims, rotated tyres around to see if it was a tyre issue but the noise still there. I reckon I could here a faint noise 6 months ago but of course no one else could. Started to become really noticeable the last month. The noise speeds up and down along with the speed of the car. The noise still there once you accelerate to 60-70km and knock it into neutral and just roll along. Doing this take the gear box and engine out of the problem as nothing rotating. Engaged the 4WD and the noise still there. Had it up on the hoist with 4WD to replicate the noise but nothing, obviously need load bearing weight on the front end to get the noise again. Definitely sound like its coming from the front RHS tyre??????

Have you checked the caliper slides and rotor runout(using a DTI)?

Not sure if anyone resolved this - have you checked the speedo cable? My dad had an issue with his Navara - weird noise, noone could find it ( I put it down to just being a Nissan). Ended up speedo cable needed replacing.

Hi guy, just reading through some of the comments regarding the front wheel area noise, Has anyone found the awnser? My 08 N70 started making a similar noise after I changed the front coil springs only, I was thinking it was the cv joints as the angle has changed any feed back would be appreciated

Thanks Phil

Hi new poster, new hilux, same problem

so, did anyone try the speedo cable solution yet?

it's been 4 years for some of you.  surely there's been someone has solved it, no?

Dead set easy to rule out the speedo cable, just unscrew/ disconnect it off the g/box and tie it up out of the way and go for a spin around the block

yep, it was the speedo cable, took 30 seconds to unscrew from transfer case, drove around the block, silence!!

unreal how it can make such a squealing racket

many thanks for this thread being here and Cory inparticular.

the noise got me $500 dropped off a 2002 hilux btw, was a complete mystery, I figured $500 worth of mystery, now it's just a couple of hours to pull the dash off and unclip the speedo.

This might help you out mate, I was having similar noise in my little 2001 workmate, and what I did was unscrew the speedo cable as you already have done, then put my cordless drill on the end of the INNER cable.

Spinning the cable SLOWLY using the cordless, I then slowly drew the cable out, which came out very easy, once out I cleaned it, I then REINSERTED it using VASALINE smeared over the inner in a manner so it lubed it without clagging the sh+t out of it,

That was 12 mths ago and its been smooth and quiet ever since

You will know when the inner is fully home when the speedo starts to register ( if you have the drill turning the right direction ) and the gearbox end will sit where it did before you started.

Its dead set easy to do and if the cable only lacks lube, saves hours rooting around pulling dash apart to unclip it off the back of instrument cluster, if it comes out and its knackered you know for certain youre up for another speedo cable,

Hope I didn't bore you ranting on,

Cheers CONROD

bore me, thats like the ol joke about drillers always chucking the most boring christmas party yeah?.. 😁😜

man thats great info !! , you just saved me a day (been reading about puling the dash out- looks like a day to me) of complete and utter tedium.

very serious question , which way should I spin it out?

clockwise or anti?

You can spin it out either direction, as its not physically attached to the speedo needle,  but on reinsertion, you can also turn it either way, the majority you will be feeding it in by hand anyway as you need to apply the lube, ( Lube and turn, Lube and turn ) but when you are almost fully home turning it Anti-clockwise will allow your speedo to register speed, slow speed on your drill is all that's required, once its home having it on high speed will allow you to check if its smooth,

Another tip, with your bonnet open feed the speedo cable end that you removed back up through the engine bay, removing it off its retaining clips so the whole cable assembly is up where you can stand up and perform the removal and re-assembly of the inner, save rooting  around underneath and allows you to hold it more or less in a straight line

( If you ever have the opportunity to get a speedo pulled apart, they have a small cylindrical drum which spins around whats looks to be a magnet and the faster the drum spins it draws the needle to register speed )

As I,m not the one doing the job mate,no responsibility taken as Im only advising you of the way I went about it 736800870_cheers1.gif.a1e4ae82b2c5326af10816b5d5d980d9.gif
