Hi All

I hope somebody can help me

I have a 1999 model Camry automatic, every so often it won't start, all the ignition lights come on but the starter motor won't turn over and it doesn't make any noise.

This might happen once a week or a couple of times in a week sometimes it might not happen for a month or so

The strange thing is that I can wait 2 minutes and it will start or sometimes it might take 40 minutes and it will start.

Sometimes pulling the lever to open the bonnet and it will start, or closing the bonnet and it will start other times I have hit the battery with a hammer softly and it will start

All these things seem to be jarring something for it to start

Its very frustrating when after work you just want to go home

I have taken it to an auto electrician and mechanics but my luck it doesn't happen when I have it there

I have had the starter motor reconditioned, changed the starting relay it has a new battery, I have also changed the battery terminals

an auto electrician said it might be the gear selector switch on the gearbox in which I had it bypassed to eliminate the switch but it still happens.

I am lost now, without it happening when i have it at the mechanics or auto electricians I don't know what to do, I am out-laying money with no solution to the problem

I hope someone can help

cheers

Mick

Are there any lights on the dash when it happens, like the engine light or the security/ Immobiliser light?

As in there is no light for an immobiliser? or it's not on? I'm pretty sure that a 99 Camry will have one.

I re read your original post and you said that sometimes when you open or close the bonnet, or tap the battery it will start, how old is your battery, and do the leads attached to your battery fit on the terminals properly? have you checked for any loose wires in the engine bay?
