Got a 1990 Camry Station Wagon. For 3 days in a row the charge light came on but only intermittently ie it would come on, go off, come on, go off etc. The car stopped doing so for a few weeks but it has now started again only it doesn't happen every trip. Any ideas where to start looking?

Battery not that old and showing up ok when tested with multimeter. Alternator seems ok too and if it was that it, wouldn't it have completely deteriorated to the point that the light was on more often?

seems old enough for it to become intermittently on. u gonna wait until the light comes solid so u can see how long your car runs before it stops on the middle of the road?

I'm just speaking from my experience as well... Having replaced 4 alternators on my old ae92 corolla - I know a thing or two about the red battery light coming on intermittently. Could be wrong - but it would be the very first place I look. Check the brushes and make sure they are still doing thier job.

Thanks guys for your replies so far. The multimeter says the alternator is fine. I'll try and check the brushes. Are they relatively easy to inspect, and if they're worn where does one find replacements?

Give it to an auto electrician and get it overhauled for cheap

Tested the alternator again, had heater, radio, wipers, headlights going. The multimeter read b/w 13.8 and 14.3 volts. Wife now remembers that charge light came on after driving over speed humps so now I'm thinking it's a cable/wire, not sure which one or perhaps something has come loose?

Could well be the alternator losing connections, check the brushes usually a $3 fix

Checked the brushes, plenty of length on them still. Have not had a repeat of the dashboard light for few months now.
