ST184 in need of a new 5FSE engine

Hi guys,

Could you please advise what's the easiest option for replacing a dead 5SFE engine? I am thinking to get one from a Camry, since there are plenty around in Melbourne. However, I understand that there are small differences between engines fitted to various Toyotas, so what would be the best Camry donor generation? (the one with the 5SFE that fits straight into my car, without having to change anything else). Anything else to be aware of?

Thank you!

How dead is dead ? What's wrong with your engine ?

Have you considered getting it rebuilt ? This way you get to keep the numbers matching engine to the chassis.

BTW, I love those old Celicas. I remember them well back in the early 90s. They were really slick and head of their time.

It looks like a dented oil pan and sump have caused restricted oil pick-up. Crankshaft bearing completely burnt out + some damage to upper engine components. Loud knocking and no power at all. I've been advised best is to find a replacement engine, as the cost of repair will greatly exceed the value of the whole car.

So, here I am, trying to see what simple options I have.

No Camry engine will be identical (from memory the Celica 5S doesn't run the balance shafts but the Camry does), but as far as electrics go the 4th gen (SXV10) will be closer as it ran a distributor, whereas the later 5th Gen (SXV20) Camry had twin coil-packs

I don't mind if it's with/without the balancer shaft - I am mostly worried about matching electrical connections and same auxiliary equipment. I'll have a look at the SXV10 Camry engine. Thanks for pointing it out!

I concur with Hiro, they don't have balancer shafts, which is why they're rough as bags. If you really wanted a nice Celica to drive I'd swap it out for a 3S-GE 😉

Otherwise just find a stock Celica motor somewhere, bound to be a few about.
