1998 RAV4 non original front drive shafts.

Has anyone used non original drive shafts, I have read the quality can vary, I only do about 10000 ks a year (if that) in this vehicle, I'm not buying original due to cost.  Any comments would be appreciated regarding non original shaft quality and durability.

There's nothing wrong with aftermarket CV shafts as long as they come from a reputable supplier. Just make sure you get the exact part number for your specified vehicle.

Genuine parts are nice if you have the extra cash to burn but it's totally unnecessary. I've used after CV's in the past and they're all much of a muchness. You can even have your original CV's reconditioned if their not too far gone and keep as spares if you plan to keep the car for a long time.

Thanks Tony, any recommendations on what brand to use and who does rebuilds, regards

Not sure of any particular brands to be honest, but they are all much of a muchness if they're reconditioned here. Most reco shops will use quality Japanese bearings etc. The reason why they go bad in the first place is mainly due to contamination of the grease when the boot rubber split open. The grease runs out, water and dirt enter and will prematurely end the life of the CV joint. This is why periodic inspections are so important. If you spot something wrong in the early stages you can nip it in the bud and save a lot of headache further down the track.

Have a look online and ask the seller about the quality. Most shops will want repeat business so it's not in their interest to sell an inferior product.
