BMW Sauber has estimated the damage caused by Nick Heidfeld's frightening shunt at Indianapolis at a cool $245,000 (US) - according to Blick.

As well as smashed bodywork, the main expense is the totally-destroyed wheel suspension, Technical Director Willy Rampf said.

Reportedly, the actual monocoque has been spared.

“Actually, impact-wise, it was very, very small,” Heidfeld explained after barrel-rolling four or five times.

Holding his helmet while talking to reporters, which had filled up with gravel, he added: “It was the first somersault, or whatever you call it, I've had. But I am fine.”

Montoya giving the big F U to McLaren and F1 politics!!!

Personally Montoya is one of my fav drivers.. can be fast on the track and great character off the track.. so it'll be sad to see him leave F1 :(

But i think he made the right move, and give F1 a wake up call.

Montoya - switch to NASCAR couldn't be better

09 July 2006

Juan Pablo Montoya says he's been thinking about making the switch from F1 to NASCAR for quite some time, when the news was made official on Sunday afternoon. The Colombian will take up NASCAR duties with Chip Ganassi's team as of next year.

"I am so happy to be entering the fastest growing racing league in the world," said Montoya. "I've thought about this for quite some time but the opportunity had to be right. I've known and worked with Chip for a number of years and this situation could not be better for me. I have a lot of confidence in my ability as a race car driver and in Chip and Felix as owners. I know the transition will not be easy but I can't wait to get behind the wheel."

Montoya will pilot the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge Charger while running for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Rookie of the Year title along with an assortment of NASCAR Busch Series races.

Montoya in shock NASCAR switch

Monday, 10, July, 2006, 01:57

Juan Pablo Montoya will turn his back on Formula 1 at the end of this season and switch to America’s NASCAR series.

The McLaren driver will reunite with Chip Ganassi Racing, with whom he achieved spectacular success on his last stint racing in the USA, winning the 1999 Champ Car title and the 2000 Indianapolis 500.

The shock news was announced by Montoya and Ganassi in a press conference at the Chicagoland NASCAR event on Sunday morning.

Montoya’s future has been one of the key talking points of the feverish F1 ‘silly season’.

McLaren had not taken up its option to retain him for 2007 and after a disappointing 2006 campaign to date his place in the Woking team was in jeopardy – especially with a bevy of other candidates in the frame for the coveted seat alongside new arrival Fernando Alonso.

With Toyota expected to re-sign Jarno Trulli for another three years and Red Bull’s interest apparently on the wane, Montoya’s options to remain in F1 were looking limited.

Ganassi recently expressed an interest in renewing his association with Montoya but it was assumed any overtures would be in connection with his IRL IndyCar squad.

Instead the Colombian will take on a completely new challenge after signing what was described as a "multi-year" deal.

He will become the first F1 driver to compete in NASCAR full-time in the 58-year history of the stock car category.

“I am so happy to be entering the fastest growing racing league in the world,” he said.

“I’ve thought about this for quite some time, but the opportunity had to be right.

“I’ve known and worked with Chip for a number of years and this situation could not be better for me.”

Ganassi revealed that negotiations began “just last week” and presented no complications.

“We’ve obviously enjoyed some previous success, and that made it a lot easier,” he told the Associated Press.

“We have some opportunities to do some things after that.

“We had a very quick negotiation – if you can even call it that.

“It’s nice to have somebody in your car who wants to be there, wants to be with your team, wants to be a part of it.

“He said, ‘I want to get back to racing’. The guy loves racing. And what better place than here?”

Montoya will drive the #42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge Charger in NASCAR’s premier Nextel Cup class as well as contesting a limited programme of events in the second-string Busch division.

The only time he has ever driven a NASCAR was when he swapped cars with Jeff Gordon at a promotional event at Indianapolis in 2003 and sampled the American’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Several open-wheel stars have attempted to make a second career for themselves in NASCAR but in recent years only Tony Stewart has made the transition successfully.

Damn!! :( no more Montoya in F1 :( not even one more race...

JPM out, de la Rosa in at McLaren

Tuesday, 11, July, 2006, 11:54

Juan Pablo Montoya's Formula 1 career appears to be over sooner than anyone expected after McLaren announced on Tuesday morning that the Colombian will step down from his race seat with immediate effect.

The Woking team issued a statement saying that test driver Pedro de la Rosa will take Montoya’s place alongside Kimi Raikkonen starting with this weekend’s French Grand Prix.

McLaren claimed Montoya’s departure was by mutual agreement to enable him to spend time with his family at his Miami home and begin preparations for his new career in NASCAR.

When announcing his deal at Chicagoland on Sunday, Montoya gave no indication that he planned to make an early return to the States, insisting that he would have to see out the F1 season before turning his attention to an intensive NASCAR testing programme.

There has been speculation in the Spanish press that Montoya breached his contract by revealing his 2007 plans without McLaren's knowledge, and that it was this that triggered his split with the team.

But McLaren boss Ron Dennis said the decision was taken in Montoya's best interests and wished the Colombian well in his future endeavours.

"Juan Pablo is an exciting driver and immensely likeable character who will undoubtedly make a successful transition to the NASCAR scene," Dennis said.

"We have agreed that with so many things happening in Juan Pablo's life right now, he should take some time out of the car and prepare professionally and personally for the future."

Montoya added: "I know that it will be a tough transition but I'm really excited about the opportunity to move into the NASCAR championship.

"I have enjoyed most of my time in Formula 1 and I'm grateful for this opportunity to settle my personal life and concentrate on my future career."

An amicable split would be in all parties' interests since Montoya's NASCAR deal will see him race a Dodge, an American brand owned by Mercedes-Benz parent company DaimlerChrysler, which has a 40% shareholding in McLaren.

"We believe that Juan Pablo's decision to move to NASCAR is very important for him professionally and we will give him every support to ensure that it is a successful transition," said Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug.

Montoya's F1 career has spanned five and a half seasons, 94 race starts, seven victories, 13 pole positions and 30 podiums. His best finish in the world championship was third, with Williams in 2003.

Mercedes has become the second engine maker in Formula One to break the elusive 20,000rpm barrier.

Williams' current supplier, Cosworth, was the first to reach the milestone in qualifying trim, but at Magny Cours Mercedes' Norbert Haug reportedly took great delight in overseeing the achievement in the back of a silver McLaren racer.

"We've cracked 20,000," he was quoted as saying by Eurosport AutoMagazin.

Earlier this season, the results of an acoustic study showed that the third and fourth highest-revving V8 power plants in pit lane belonged to BMW and Ferrari

Toyota is looking good, but too bad for all the crap that happen..

Trulli did well from the last row to 7th... (he should have taken out the renaults for 5th :P )

Not bad for Ralf to have a little crash and 4 pits to finish 10th. NB. Toyota had 4th and 5th fastest laps only behind the Ferraris and Kimi. And i think Trulli was the fastest in the speed trap.

Good to see McLaren up there as well :D

Ferrari have certainly got their stuff together (lol did u see how happy Schui was? )

Overall that was a great race, lots of overtaking; Ralf working his way up from the back, and Kimi's 3rd place pass on Button in the closing stages :D was super!!

Woohoo... next race only 7 days away :D :D
