Hi, I have recently purchased a 1994 Corolla Sprinter which im pretty sure has the AE101R motor in it.

Im looking to do a engine swap and was recommended that i go with a 3sgte turbo motor and gearbox from a MR2. I also wanted to put a GT4 diff on it to get 4WD for something different but was told there is alot of chassi work that needs be done to do this and will cost alot.

Basically im hoping for some suggestions and opinions on what i can do with it,

Ideally i would like to put a 2jz or 1jz or even 1gte in it as ive seen on few of the older corollas like the ae86, but not sure if something like that will fit in a sprinter.

Any tips or info would be great.

Best bet is to head over to twincam.info. Its an Oz website that caters for mainly the AE series corolla.

But I would say that maybe a later model GZE would be a more easy and sensible swap, with the help of a slightly larger intercooler and a nevo pulley your car would be quite fiesty. The 20V is over rated and would be a pain to drive as it does not produce a sensible amount of torque to chug around the city, unless you like to rev it slightly higher everyday. Hell I drive a sportivo, but the 20V is really lacking the torque to move a heavier car.

You could go the 3sgte route, dunno how hard that would be be though. Forget about 4wd as the money involved would be a waste, better to sell the car and get a ST185 GT-4...

I'd go for the 3S because I have the gear to do all the fabrication required.

Before removing the original engine from the bay, measure the location of the crank pulley center bolt to the chassis rail. Record this location acurately using 3d measurements.

Use the MR2 turbo box, and source an AE101 GTZ E58 series gearbox, driveshafts and mounts. Use the AE101 GTZ shift arm assembly to convert the MR2 box to FWD shift configuration. Bolt the box to the engine, slap the engine in the bay and bolt up the three mounts. Jack up the engine with a trolley jack from under the sump and lift it up so the timing case rises, get the timing case end in a position where the 3S crank pulley bolt is in the same location the old engine's was. Then raise the engine a further 10mm and fabricate the timing cover engine mount. There's a couple of ways you can do this, fabricate a new mount completely, or chop the brackets off the chassis and weld new ones on there to suit the 3S timing mount.

Then install a GT4 accelerator cable, AE101 or AE92 GTZ driveshafts and you're ready to put the engine on the ground. Source a GT4 radiator and do the appropriate mount mods to make it fit. Sort out a FMIC if you're going down that path or cut a hole in the bonnet for the TMIC. Get some custom AC lines made, use GT4 PS lines. Then sort out the wiring... Combine the ENGINE part of the MR2's engine loom with the BODY part of your car's original engine loom. This requires de-looming the whole lot, cutting and joining about 12 wires after all have been traced and labelled. I use masking tape every 20cm to hold the loom in it's correct shape while tracing and combining. Once the new bay loom is complete, re-apply the loom tube and tape so it looks factory.

Slap a walbro 255lph pump in the tank for good measure and you're basically good to go. I'd also look into a brake upgrade to at least AE101 superstrut GZE calipers and discs.
