1989 Toyota Camry - st165 3SGTE

Hey all,

My name is Greg and this is my 1989 Toyota Camry. I've owned the car since December 1999, and it sat pretty stock for a number of years, bar a few stereo upgrades. Around 2004 I added the rims, and then a bodykit in 2006.

By mid 2007 the modifying bug really bit hard, and I had the interior and boot recovered in red and black leather and marine vinyl. The boot install has been recovered in the same theme.

I was pretty much going to leave it at that, but then something came along that was too good to pass-up.... a 3sgte from a GT4 celica! So around march this year it went into the shop, and two and a half months later is has come back out with the following:-

st165 3sgte engine with painted rocker cover and 2.5 inch stainless steel intercooler piping and custom stainless air filter box.

Battery moved to the boot

850CC injectors

Bosch intank fuel pump

a new set of custom coilovers (should be on by the end of the month.

at the moments its putting out about 140kw atw at 8psi. When it goes back into the shop in a few weeks after a run in period i'm hoping i'll hit 200kws at around 16psi on the dyno. But we'll see. Either way, its still alot of fun :) :) :)

Thanks for looking!

Cheers

Greg

Can you say SLEEPER?

Thats a nice setup man, i really like the interior as well. Was it an easy engine swap? as in engine mounts, and gearbox mating, what ECU are you running?

Well done, good to see a variety of wild cars here

Thanks guys :)

The ECU Is a Stinger EMS. Its also getting a dual stage boost controller put in a few weeks.

The engine swap wasn't too bad, as the mounts of my camry are exactly the same as the celica it came from. the gearbox is the standard camry 5 spd with a GT4 centre. Everything fit straight into it. I had an airconditioning system put in at the same time as the engine (my camry didn't come with it standard) so there were some wiring issues which made the whole process a little longer than first thought.

I'm getting the feeling i will need an LSD at some stage in the future to try and get even power down at the front wheels. But thats a ways off yet.

Hey all,

Just a quick update. Had the coilovers & HKS EVC boost controller and turbo timer put on. The car has done 175kw and the front wheels a 16psi but thats with a turbo that isn't running at 100% efficiency. When I get round to upgrading the turbo in the future it should do 200kw without too many dramas.

Cheers

Nice work man, and here I was thinking hotting up my 91 camry was a lost cause.. Good to know so much can be done to them! Love the interior, going for the red/black theme inside and out myself, but long way to go before I can getting it looking as nice as yours.

As for the turbo, hell I wouldn't know where to start :P
