Stick away from "package" deals and forced sales tactics like that, while selling things is their job they don't have to force it onto you. There are "good" systems and there are GOOD systems - what they've mentioned is pretty bad.

What do you want from a system and what music do you listen to? I can design you up a system that should fall under your budget and will kick *****.

With a budget similar to what he has, there's no need to spend that much on any gear. If you're not willing to invest in some decent gear, don't buy crap stuff - slowly build your system up. I'd first start with getting 6" splits for the front of your car, a decent 4 channel amp and a single sub for the boot. This way, you can add onto the system without needing to sell anything you've bought. Splits need the most money spent, I'd be aiming for around $400 minimum, although there is some nice speakers out there that won't break the bank (Option Audio splits are one shining example that comes to mind). Stick with the stock headunit at the moment, when you save a bit more you can go looking for some awesome deals - my old work had JVC DVD players and a screen package for $700 not so long ago.

If you can install all the gear yourself, this will save you a HUGE amount of money, if you can't try and find an experienced mate and pay him in a carton or two :)

Where are you located mate? I can suggest some good shops you can have a look at if you're in Brisbane.

EDIT: Avoid 6x9's at any cost. They'll only make things sound worse. Work on setting up your front stage

the_random_hero. What audio shop do you work at?

I'm currently looking at the alpine type x pros 6" splits that i can import for around $500. You got anything to recommend that is cheaper and better?

i also looked at the hertz range and bostons...but not sure which 1 to go with.

might get splits to replace the 6x9's at the back too since i already have 2 subs running off a mono.

cheers,

jase

i believe a lot of people will agree that alpine is good at f1 amp, and hu, not speaker.

bout hertz or boston(3 way, mid range), i installed BOTH on my aurion, tested, with sound-deadening(2 lv), ended up with hertz. Happy with it. BUT most importantly, HU! No matter how good is your speaker, if u hv a sh!t HU, u r just wasting your money/time.

I was a fitter at Autobarn Logan City, but quit about four months ago - more to do with a couple of people that worked there than anything.

Bostons sound quite nice to my ears, decent amounts of punch without being too bass heavy.

the Option Audio splits sounded a LOT smoother than the Alpine Type X's in my old managers Pathfinder, they were a combination of too trebley while not sounding "balanced", although this could have been due to where they were installed (factory position with tweeter on upper corner of dash)

I'm quite partial to Kicker RS-series speakers, installed two sets into a BMW M3, all amped with old-school Kicker amps. SO much punch and clarity, might be a bit bright for other people but I like my treble to be refined :P

But hey, my ears are probably different to a lot of others. You should go out and try as many speakers in a similar sized car to yours and see which you prefer.

In my opinion, splits in the rear are basically pointless - your front stage is where you should spend all your dollars. If anything, just throw a decent set of coax's in there and be done with it, amplify them if you have the amp available.

I disagree with the last fact. Music through a factory head unit with good aftermarket speakers will walk over a top of the line headunit with stock speakers anyday.

I agree with random hero, it's not about the headunit. I'm going to be running my stock headunit with a pair of JL ZR's and a 300/4v2 and I know already for a fact that the sound will be sex regardless of headunit. All you need is a decent amp and LOC if your running stock headunit :toast:

Oh and I have heard speakers running through an aftermarket headunit sounds pretty plain to me, but when you run it with an amp that's a different story you can tell by the difference.

Yes, many many times. Considering we were doing 10+ cars a day, I've had plenty of experience in this field.

This guy knows his audio; I'll tell you that.

LOL, on a side note Drew, I just remembered all the talk with you and Nikita about your guitar amps. Toaster/Jerry Can amp FTW.

Hell yeah, pity I sold it a while ago :( I'm quite tempted to make a couple more up and sell them.
