hey all

Ive been experimenting a little bit with fuels and things. But was wondering if the experts here would know what would be the best for a AE102 regarding engine response:

*oils

*oil filters? is it worth replacing?

*coolant

Honestly, nothing. Save your money.

Provided the filter your using at the moment is a quality product, just replace them at the same time as your oil.

As for coolant, won't see a difference either.

What are you using now? No point us saying something and you're already using something better.

Oil is very dependent on kms and how much you're currently burning (it's a 7A, so I guarantee you it'll be burning a little bit by now). I use Penrite HPR30 at the moment (20W60), if you're not burning much then a good 15W40 could be used, but if you go thin enough to notice a difference in response you'll also notice that it will just about pour out the exhaust :P

Oil filter, generally most people will say that Toyota genuine part is the best, but I've had no troubles running Ryco and Purolator filters, whatever floats your boat and doesn't cost the earth, remember it's something you should be changing every 5000km (along with the oil), 10000km is too long considering the age of the car and the probable oil consumption.

Coolant - Toyota Long Life Red is once again what most will recommend. Running a Nulon or equivalent premix or concentrate won't impact on the "response" of your engine one iota - if it does it's job, then it shouldn't matter which you use.

Penrite 30 is good for your engine and it's age. Genuine Toyota filter isn't that expensive and is prolly one of the best around.

As for coolant anything is better than nothing IMO.

I know quite a few people (including myself) who have felt a noticeable difference between using a mineral/semi-synthetic and then swapping to Royal Purple 10w40, but I was only buying it because I could get it for cost price.

4A/7A I will usually run a 15W40 due to their reputation of burning oil...

I always use genuine filters as the seals are much better than the cheaper stuff...

And as for coolant, use the toyota long life coolant, steer clear of the aftermarket green crap...

The engines a 7AFE and its done about 280,000km. So its dont a hell of alot of highway km's.

ohhh well i just got the aftermarket green coolant that you have to add water to. I better change it lol

Where can i get my hand on the toyota one? just from any toyota servicing area i take it...

recomend any 15W40 brand to go for?

Run the penrite 30 mate. the 50 might be a tad too heavy for the 7Afe

The oil filter will definitely help you to hit that magic 190 mark...

...(sorry, cheap shot, couldn't help myself  )

With 280,000kms I'd definately be running the 15W40 or even a 20W50...

Valvoline has always been a good oil to use...

Best for your engine would be a mineral based oil or semi synthetic...

In regards to the coolant, the Toyota Long Life Coolant is available from your local Toyota Spare Parts...

Your car will need 3 Litres... Should be around $10 - $15 per litre...

And while you're there, grab an oil filter and sump plug washer too :) ...
