Steering gear problems

Just got my car back after having it's steering rack mounting bushes replaced and was told by the garage that the steering rack is leaking fluid into the boots. This is after having the rack overhauled 4 years (72,000km ago).

Is this normal?

Has anyone else had similar problems and what's the cause?

Vehicle details:

1994 Camry V6 GL (NZ model), 367000km.

I had to replace my steering rack around 190,000km due ot the same issue. It's pretty common here in the US.

I'd also guess the one you got was not overhauled correctly as well.

We always replace the racks with reco items...

Comes with same warranty as new part and around $160 plus labour (I think)...

What's the warranty like?

Although it was done 4 years ago if it is leaking again due to a bodged overhaul I would want Toyota to fix it.

The racks we use are reconditioned from another company...

All we do is remove and refit...

Toyota cannot be blamed for a leaking rack when they didn't do the work...

But if it's 4 years old then you're well out of warranty anyway...

Yeah, guess it's just one of those things.

Luckily I don't think it's leaking too bad as I haven't noticed any drop in the power steering fluid.

Will see what shes doing come warrant time.
