Park Brake

Just a question to everyone, how far do you have to depress the park brake before it actually starts to stop the car from rolling, took my car to the service dept. yesterday and was told it was normal. (my park brake goes nearly a foot in). thought this was iffy as my family's honda odyssey and merc, both only need to be depressed about 10cm. Am i subject to cable stretch?

lol i dont think you'd want to DIY on something as important as your handbrake.

next time you get your car serviced, just tell the guy that you also want your handbrake tightened. same thing i did.

too bad a few weeks later, the cable was stretched again.

Why not? Its only adjustment of the peddle. It’s not as though he is pulling it to bits of anything. But if you want to adjust the rear shoes you may want to be a little more mechanical minded, but still not that hard.

I have the same problem, effectively no park brake, I have 2 aurions and did the adjustment at the disc when I replaced the rotors, sanded the inner part of the new rotors with co**** paper, roughed up the brake shoes, cleaned it all and adjusted. It works very well now.

Question - where is the cable adjustment done? Wifes car has the pedal going to the floor almost and it still does pretty much nothing.

the cable adjuster is located next to the park brake, you will need a 10mm spanner and a 10mm deep socket to adjust it

Thanks for that info, on my 90 000km aurion the adjustment at the pedal was at its loosest, removed rear discs and turned adjuster there about 6 clicks on each side,( I think I should have done another 6 clicks), then tightened the cable at the pedal about 10-15 turns and now its all working very well.

Also took the opportunity to brush the dust... off all the brake parts, run some rough sand paper over the park brake shoes and the inner surface of the disc where it rubs.

I live in a smallish town and hardly ever reverse, even to park and I think park brakes adjust themselves when you reverse - at least thats how most used to be made, so that might explain why the in brake adjusters were all the way in.
