I had a similar issue with my timing on my smallport Mick it ended up being that i had set the timing to top dead centre but on the wrong compression stroke being 180 deg out, a quick hoy to the blind kid and we sorted it straight out as i cannot see the numbers on my lower timing belt plastic , thus we removed the cam gear cover and lined the gears up correctly - rookie mistake from myself but now shes all sorted again.

Mick

Yeah, that is what I am thinking it is.

I did my timing based on the 3SGTE manual, which every time i have worked on a 3SGTE it has worked, but clearly not on my monstosity.

Going to re-time her tonight and see how we go.

so after discussing with trent, we realised my motor has a much larger stroke than a 3SG, and setting my timing using the 3S book will never work, it will allwasy be 3 or so teeth out.

All this time my cam timing was 'correct' but still wrong, the cams were not out by 180deg, etc

It could explain why you still had half a turn left on that stroke when the valve opened. I think you will just need to wing it and get the cams as close as possible.

Rough enough is good enough?

If anyone can get it working, it is you Mick.

There is no chance to a valve hitting the piston, its a non-interference design, of course it will be tested by hand first. I'm gunna go give him a hand before the meet tomorrow night.

*edit* might be worth a look at the lifters too

as it turns out the motor is now an interference engine... how do i know this?

6 or 7 of the intake valves are bent.

At this stage project 5SGTE is on hold until i decide if its worth the effort to essentially pull the motor down again.

no no no... not on hold...

this MUST be finished... if you dont finish it, i'll mock you for ever!

TBH ash I am sick of looking at the damn thing, and wasting money on it. at this stage the minimum I need to get is new valves and a vrs kit. If the pistons are damaged then I will need to source new ones...

I could always throw the stock head back on the thing and call it a day, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

I wont be scrapping the whole car just yet, but its going to have to sit on the backburner until I get the corolla done anyway, and I may as well do the vert too.

I would like to have something that isn't the yaris for the national meet, lol.

nooooooooooooo... i like that car...

but i completely understand where you're coming from... :)

maybe if its on the back burner for a while, your interest will peak again in the almighty 5sgte... :D

*sigh* this project is now officially over.

I will be stripping/parting it out shortly.

But, I havent given up on the 5SGTE as a motor the engine will be copping some intense stuff in the next few months and going in the vert.\\

Well it sure was fun to follow the progress of this fine example of bush mechanics.

Yeah, I am sad too. But i just cant pour any more money into this thing.

I may or may not have another 5th gen though ;)

boooo!!!! :(

but i completely understand... got to that point with my corolla... spent about 15k on that car and thought "thats enough"...

still miss that girl though

well, at least the memories will live on in the girls car... i mean the vert.. :P :D

oh and you'll definitely have a unique car at the nat meet too... ;)
