No lights, not response from headunit?

Hey All,

Today was driving down a 80Km road, and well was listening to a song with lots of Bass, and when it was about to go THUMP, the headunit basically turn it's self off, non of the lights or anything turn on.

What could be wrong?

I'm using a AMP, via a Live Level Converter & The AMP light doesn't turn on, symbolizing that maybe the Accessory wire got pulled out maybe?

Anyone with idea's?

Did I blow something up?

Did it short circuit?

Did it... (what) I have no idea...

How do I know if it's something that has died in the fuse box?

Also, where is it located?

Open your bonnet and on the right hand side (near your intake) there is a long rectangular box which is your fuse box, one of them anyway.

Crack it off and it should be a 15AMP mini blade fuse that should be replaced in no 5 slot. (refer to your service manual) It is called DOME that needs its fuse replaced.

I had to change mine last night as I blew 1 fuse when fitting my DVD headunit.

the fuse marked DOME is only the 12v constant wire and there is no point checking it if ur interior light still works. ur accesories fuse will be in the car most probably be marked AUDIO(durr) or cigaret., silly karr i would be guesing u cut ur harness off??? that would be the only way u can blow a fuse....

if the amp is not lighting then maybe its your constant power? check the fuse on the feed to your amp? then check to see if all the active and ground terminals are connected well. high resistance joint can cause you to blow a fuse.

I forgot to add, that even if I remove the power cable from the AMP, the headunit still won't turn on.

Do you own a test light? If not, buy one - it will come in handy. Also buy a little kit of different automotive 'blade' fuses, from 5A to 30A. You need to check the fuses in your fusebox, then on the headunit itself (while it's powered, test there's power on both the exposed metal tabs on the fuse body). I'd say you've blown the protector fuse on the back of the headunit if you still have interior lights.

Because my headunit, has NO lights, even when the headlights are on, the headunit stays black, can't turn it on... Is there a way that Toyota can check this for me? Vanity lights, if you want to call them that. It's not something you'll have to go to Toyota for, if you've got any friends that know cars it's a $1 fix and about ten minutes looking for the problem.

I would suggest not touching anything in ur car again if u cant get the simplest little electrical thing working right.... dont take this as an insult. i get tonnes of these things in at work everyday and it really pisses us off cos they **** everything and expect us to fix it for them for nothin.....

Yeah I guess I did F$%^ everything up... :(

I still have no idea where I went wrong, I wired everything correctly, I just trimmed abit of wire cover & placed the Converter Wire, into the small trimmings...

LOL at this thread. Sorry but from the sounds of it, you need some first hand assistance into basic electronics 101. You would be better off if you could get someone to physically show you how things work in general, that way you can do basic troubleshooting and not wreck anything.

You head unit doesn't turn on or light up because it is getting no switched power. Your amp doesn't turn on most likely because its trigger is wired in to the same wiring as your head unit switched power. Your head unit most likely is not getting power because of a blown fuse.

I would pop your bonnet and inspect the fuses that are marked to indicate interior, radio, dome, acc, etc (no harm in checking them all) and if they are blown, replace them. As well, there are some fuses in a fuse panel inside the car and it won't hurt checking those as well.

Checking fuses is a quick and simple process, and for problems like this, are a very simple fix.

I am willing to have a go, just which & where about is THIS fuse box?

If your willing and don't think you will mess anything else up, try looking behind your glove box. That is a fairly common place to put the other fuse panel. Sometimes you can access it from behind a panel underneath, or you may need to take the glovebox out.
