Good Morning folks,

I'm looking at purchasing a Rav4 and am just doing some research on the internet and comparing the two models (mentioned above). I was wondering if any current owners (or previous) could help me with a couple of things. Are these models chain or belt driven and what are they like on fuel being 2.4L and constant 4x4??? Do they infact run the same engine as the Camry of the same era?

I'm looking at updating from the Sportivo to something a little more family orientated maybe, and something thats comfy to take the family and little Jack Russell away for the weekend and do some soft off road stuff if I need too.

The other vehicle I'm looking at in comparasion is the Grand Vitara (JB, 4cyl, 2.4L - petrol), but regardless of what I get I'd like manual, 4cyl, pref 4x4 and pref under $20,000.

Any aditional helpful comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Julez

Completely off-topic and of no help to the question, but ZOMG! Haven't heard from you in ages.

Apart from that, I can tell you that the 2AZ-FE (as used in the Rav4s you are looking at) use a timing chain and are the same engine used in the Camry from the same era.

To me, they feel underpowered; 2.4L 125kW engine AWD carrying about 1.6t; drinks about 9-14L/100kms. My parents have an auto, probably better in both power delivery and fuel consumption in the manual! :)

You could be better off with an auto because of market demand. There are plenty of auto Rav4 but you rarely see a manual. ACA33R model is the way to go over the ACA23R as it has more features and is a safer car. The only offset is that it weighs more and has the same engine meaning you will notice acceleration a bit slow.

IMHO get the V6 version if you can. People think it uses more fuel but it doesn't as my friend has a 4cyl and mine is V6 where he uses more fuel because he has to accelerate much more to get around. Just a quick look the cheapest V6 is 25k so that's probably out of your budget.

So if you have to get the 4cyl don't go with the CV version but go with Cruiser.

Don't know if this is far from you but it's a good bargain and it's manual. http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/dealer/details.aspx?R=10389770&__Qpb=true&Cr=6&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294962861%204294962855%20900%204294962853&SearchAction=N&silo=1011&seot=1&tsrc=allcarhome&__Nne=15&trecs=78&__sid=12EF431ACFE0
