Corolla overtakes Commodore as top seller

The toppling of the long-term market leader reflects changes in the market overall.

Toyota's imported Corolla soared to the top of the sales charts in September, overtaking Holden's Commodore, the long-term market leader, in a move that mirrored what is happening in the market as a whole.

The whole market took a breather in September, with sales of 3248 a day hovering at the same level as in August, although it was up 5 per cent on the previous September.

In the first nine months of 2005, sales of cars and trucks have risen 5.5 per cent to 749,347 vehicles to keep the market on track to break the million-unit mark for the first time.

The Corolla's success as the biggest seller of the month reflected the month-long Toyota-thon promotion by the Japanese giant, but other small-car sellers were right up there, too.

"We can't get enough Mazda3s," said Mazda's Alastair Doak. "Sales have been artificially low. The waiting list is six weeks long."

The leading Korean brand, Hyundai, lifted sales 11 per cent from August levels to pass Mitsubishi and take sixth place for the month thanks to another class-leading performance from its Getz model.

But while locally made large cars took only 21.1 per cent of the passenger car sales, compared with 25.6 per cent for the year to date, the high price of petrol may not be the main factor behind the shift in buyer preferences, according to market analyst Richard Johns.

"I haven't been buying the cost of petrol story," said Mr Johns, of Australian Automotive Intelligence.

"Have a look at the sales of four-wheel drives. Yes, sales of the large ones are down, but that probably has more to do with the fact that the two leading models, the Patrol and the LandCruiser, have been on the market for eight or nine years.

"People are probably waiting for the next models. There is a big loyalty factor in that segment."

Similarly, he points out the Commodore has been in production for eight years, too.

I don't think there are double standards, but I think it can depend on who spots the duplication first.

Some people will just say, as in here, "this has already been covered". Some other people, whether they be more passionate or simply more frustrated, will say their piece "in a firmer voice" (to quote a scene from Demolition Man).

Just as in the "real world", this forum has a diverse cross-section of personalities.

its not a case of doubble standards, when you post somthing like this that has only come about in the past week or so a 2nd thread is not a problem, when you get people posting about fuel milage and so on where there is countless threads already thats when it becomes frustrating

and remember kiddies the search button holds the key. :)
