In case you didn't already know, radar/lidar detectors are illegal in NSW, and you're opening yourself up to a world of hurt if you buy and fit one.

I would recommend you buy the beltronics sti xr instead. It's made out of magnesium construction making it undetectable to police radars. I actually have one mounted into my dash and it has saved me numerous times.

Hmmm cobra is so-so if you don't like beltronics I would secondly recommend escort 9500ixl it has a built in gps that tells you all the set red cameras. Honestly you get What you pay for. Spend money on a cheap detector don't expect it to perform miracles, spend that little bit extra and save that whole heap more :)

Just to add further credence to the "it's highly illegal, don't bother" argument, these are the fines in NSW in regards to radar detectors (info is a year old but I doubt it has changed much)

$1556 for owning, buying or selling a "speed evasion device" aka radar detector

$1556 + 9 demerit points for using a "speed evasion device", plus confiscation of the unit

$1556 if you fail to surrender the device.

So in total, you could be up for ~$4700 worth of fines + 9 demerit points, which is the same as being caught doing 45km/h+ over the limit in a school zone TWICE (as far as fine is concerned), or getting caught 10-20km/h over THREE TIMES (for demerit points). Factor in the cost of the unit itself, and just how much of a speed demon are you that owning one makes financial sense? And just because they are supposedly undetectable, doesn't mean their use can't be detected (based off sudden braking etc) and they can't be found if you're pulled over...

I'll freely admit that I'm not the world's slowest driver, and I do not always obey the limits (but still don't drive like an idiot), and I have only had 2 speeding tickets in my 10 year driving life, both for <15km/h over the limit - once in a zone where everyone was doing the same speed going up a hill from a 60 to an 80 zone, and once in a 60 zone that used to be 70 after a long frustrating day at work 2 blocks from home. Not once have I even considered getting a radar detector, because the cost outweighs the benefits many times over

so what if your driving from sydney to brisbane?

Why would that change anything?

we for starters its a highway not most people will drive 110 all the way.. here and there you will go over abit. police are in the bushs trying to catch you out.. so the radar helps you by slowing down... its not bad, its legal in W.A ..

Haha gosh at times like this I'm glad I live in WA haha what harsh penalties. It's like how p players can't drive over 90 but over here we can drive to whatever the limit is but drive 45 over the limit and your car gets towed away and they'll impound it for at least 3 months :) honestly I'm abit a dare devil so even if it was illegal I'll still have one in my car as soon as it detects a cop car I'll unplug it before they'll even have time to see it mounted onto my dash :P of course I don't recommend you doing it I don't want you to kill me if you get a fine or lose demerits hahaha but its definitely worth the money spend on it though

Isn't there something in the rules of this forum with regards to encouraging illegal behavior (ie. posession of a radar detector)?

Posted

Well I'm not really encouraging "illegal" behavior since what I'm doing isn't "illegal" in the state I'm in. And like I've already stated I don't recommend that he'll go and purchase one just because I said it's worth having one :) I was giving aurion12 some info of what radars would be a better choice. But if you're offended with what I have to Say then feel free to report me and have my comments removed. Thank you

While it may be legal on WA, you are saying to a member from a state where it is illegal that "even it was illegal, I'd still have one in my car". By all means, this is your choice, however I would advise the op strongly against the idea. We, as a club cannot be seen to be condoning illegal behavior. It seems your posts are treading a very thin line.

Mainly because like the NT and Tasmania, WA isn't really much of a state.

The only good thing WA has is the fuel watch site, so that's a pro i guess. It gets to hot weather wise in summer so no go it is!
