US model 2ZZ-GE

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just browsing the TOyota USA site, and their 2004 Matrix that is equipped with the 2ZZ-GE has less power this year!

It used to be the same 189hp, but now the specs are as follows:

173 hp @ 7,600 rpm

127 lb.-ft. @ 4,400 rpm

Just found the Matrix forum, and it turns out that the 2003 model has 180hp (9hp less than ours as sharmz pointed out), but the 2004 is only 173hp, and that Toyota Canada gave them a C$250 cheque while the US guys got 1 year roadside assistance (!?).

Hope that our beloved Sportivo never gets detuned to have its peak torque at 4400rpm. That would just make it a dull car......... Also, 127 lb.ft = 172Nm. Hmm, that means they reduced the effect of lift?

Looking at the Toyota-supplied dyno plot for the 189hp Corolla T-Sport, around 170Nm comes roughly at 4500rpm. Does this mean that with the US-spec 2ZZ-GE, there is no extra torque gained from lift but rather just an "extension" of the torque curve? Gee, they might as well call the engine a 2ZZ-FE since the 1ZZ-FE already makes 171Nm at 4200rpm (but can't spin to 8000rpm).

Is the matrix the new look corolla thats coming out? Its looks kinda s*&&*.

Anyway car makers make US cars with more down low grunt. Cos thats how they like their autos i guess.

Honda did the same thing with the S2000 over there. Cut the revs from 9k to 8k and brought the peak torque lower to suit the US market.

I reckon it just takes away the fun if ringing out the engine for everything its worth.

Luckily, the Matrix won't be the new corolla. Looking at the photo that someone took of the supposedly new corolla, it seems to have the nice angular lights that are present on the UK Corolla T-Sport, the grill of an Avensis, and a new front spoiler with a large intake. Here's the link:

A bit further down, trd_141 said that he spoke to those same guys and they told him that they were taking photo shots for the launch of the new Corolla in May. He said that he saw the interior and also mentioned that the engine was the 100kw from the regular corolla (should be 1ZZ-FE since the iSt is a 1.5 litre and doesn't make 100kw).

Seen the iSt and that has diamond shaped headlights (like the playing card diamond), not like the longish ones in the photo.

one of the guys from work, who owns a S2000 was saying the new s2000 (latest build) o/s comes with a new Honda 2.4ltr 4cyl NA VTEC motor capable of over 200KWs. if im not mistake right now, the original s2000s specs are 170kws or so..

The US version is now 2.2 litres and 176kw where as before it was a 2 litre but Max Power (not Homer Simpson) is the same.

So is anyone here holding out for the new Sportivo? I wonder if it will have a one piece front spoiler this time.

Yeah but at least the S2000 got a capacity boost to 2.2litres increasing the peak torque value whereas the 2ZZGE gets a reduction in power and torque  .
