excessive engine vibration

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have owned 3 gen 7 Celicas but my current 2001 car exhibits much more engine vibration than the previous 2 cars. Everything checks out fine including the engine mounts and the only thing I can think of is that the engine is out of balance, maybe the flywheel/clutch? Seems unlikely, car has done 110,000 ks.

Otherwise the engine mounts may have been swapped by the previous owner but they look stock standard. Any ideas out there?

Thanks, John

Mmm, bushes? Which ones? In the meantime I think I can see what the problem is. After hours of searching I finally found an

image of the front engine mount at Mackay rubber and it looks a lot different from the one on my car. There is a lot more open space on the one in the image compared to the one on my car, which is almost solid rubber. Could it be that Toyota started fitting a "stiffer" front mount to combat wheel hop? Local Toyota don't have one in stock and have to order it in from Japan, nor do they have an image of it. Can anyone out there who owns a gen7 take a look at the front mount and tell me if there are

just 2 webs from the engine bolt hole to the outside casing and also if they get engine vibration through the steering wheel around 3000 rpm or so? [ while stationary ]

Thanks , John

Back again, just was able to get a good look at that front engine mount and it is actually the standard mount as used on all Gen7's.

So, I'm clueless as to what could cause excessive vibration at 3000rpm when stationary - enough to rattle the keys.

This is not normal, I had 2 other Gen7's which did not have excessive engine vibrations .

Thanks for your thoughts. John
