Retreads and New tyres

Hi Guys,

Any obvious ways of telling the difference between a new tyre and a retread tyre?

Just that I found a shop that sells brand new Kumho KU31 in 225/40/18 for $155 a tyre.

Its a good $30 cheaper than anywhere else in Sydney.

Thanks

It shouldn't be too difficult to tell the difference between re-treads and new tyres mate.

Basically have a close look at where the tread stops and the sidewall starts, you will see where it has a join line where the new tread has been fused to the old tyre. The other way is to take them to 200kph and if all four tyres blow out . . . . they were re-treads :D :D

I doubt anyone would be trying to sell retreads as new tyres, but dodgier things have happened.

Yeh, you should be able to spot the "weld"

and also, the difference in price is common. I found that there was a price variance of about 30 between 4 different places, everyone is just trying to make a buck and whoever is willing to go the lowest usually wins

I purchased my Potenzas from a Bridgestone place and naturally they were cheaper then bob jane and beaurepaires
